Teesta Bridge at Sevoke: Rs 1,176 Crore Six-Lane NH-10 Crossing Sanctioned

4 min read

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 1,175.59 crore for a new six-lane bridge over the Teesta at Sevoke on NH-10, the single road link that carries Siliguri traffic towards Sikkim and the North East. For equipment owners the useful number is the rate: about Rs 170 crore per kilometre. That is not a road job. It is a river-foundation and concrete job, and it will pull piling rigs, cranes and batching plants long before it needs a paver.

The quick facts

  • Sanction: Rs 1,175.59 crore (rounded to Rs 1,176 crore by Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari), announced on 30 September 2026.
  • Scope: a six-lane major bridge with approaches across the Teesta at Sevoke, Darjeeling district, about 6.9 km in all.
  • Route: NH-10, the Siliguri-Sikkim artery through the narrow Siliguri Corridor.
  • It will serve as an alternative to the Coronation Bridge, the crossing at Sevoke commissioned in 1941.

What the Centre sanctioned

The Times of India reported Gadkari’s announcement on 30 September, giving the Rs 1,176 crore figure and a 6.9 km length including approaches. IANS carried the exact Rs 1,175.59 crore and a 6.91 km length the next day, alongside West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari thanking the Centre for the sanction. Neither report names a delivery mode (EPC or HAM), a bridge-proper length, a span arrangement or a bid date.

Why is Rs 170 crore a kilometre a structures signal?

Divide the sanction by the length and you get roughly Rs 170 crore per km. Set that beside our own anchors: the Kopparthy-Kadapa road sanction worked out near Rs 52 crore per km, and the Damoh-Katni widening’s construction cost near Rs 17 crore per km. A rate three times a greenfield road and ten times a widening means most of the money sits in the river crossing, not in earthwork or pavement.

That shapes the fleet. A major bridge where a hill river leaves its gorge is usually foundation-led work: hydraulic piling rigs or well-sinking crews, crawler cranes for cages and girders, an on-site batching plant feeding transit mixers and concrete pumps. The approach roads are the conventional part, where excavators, graders and rollers do the usual road construction sequence.

Our take: this is a single-site, multi-season job, which is the classic case for a winner to mobilise its own concrete train and keep it there, while hiring earthmoving plant for the approaches in shorter bursts. The Teesta runs high from June to September, so in-river foundation work will likely bunch into the dry months, and flood exposure on NH-10 is a real risk to price into equipment insurance for any machine parked near the channel. Nothing here is orderable yet. The sanction starts a tender, not a mobilisation.

What to watch

  • The bid notice, which should settle the delivery mode, the bridge-proper length and the span design.
  • The winning contractor, since a single bridge package of this size normally goes to a tier-one bridge builder with its own piling fleet.
  • Whether the 630 km Siliguri-Guwahati-Shillong corridor Gadkari spoke about alongside it gets a formal sanction; so far it has not.

Bidding on bridge or approach work in North Bengal? Compare crane, mixer and excavator options and line up finance before the tender lands, so the fleet decision is not made in a hurry after award.
