BEML has put a battery-electric rear dump truck into its biggest size class. The BEML BH60-EV electric dump truck was shown at the company’s Mysuru Complex on 30 September 2026, and for mine operators the interesting figure is not the badge on the door. It is the 1,000 kWh battery, because that single number decides whether this machine can work on your site at all.
The quick facts
- Machine: BEML BH60-EV, described by the company as India’s first indigenously designed and developed 60-ton electric dump truck.
- Capacity (company-stated): 54,500 kg payload with a 36.4 cubic metre rock body.
- Driveline (company-stated): permanent magnet synchronous motor with a gearbox, fed by a 1,000 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion pack. Safety kit includes ROPS, emergency steering and sealed oil-cooled disc brakes.
- Claims (company-stated): 40 to 60 per cent lower operating cost than a comparable diesel machine, and about 130 tonnes of CO2 avoided per vehicle per year.
What BEML showed at Mysuru
The truck was launched virtually by CMD Shantanu Roy at the Mysuru Complex, the plant that builds BEML’s dump truck range. Industrial Punch, Indian Masterminds and PSU Watch all carried the same specification set on 30 September. BEML also said it is developing a charging package that works with site electrical infrastructure and scales to a fleet. No price, no delivery window and no customer order were disclosed. This is a separate machine from the 35-tonne electric dump truck BEML launched on 10 April 2026, not a re-badge of it.
What it means for buyers
Start with the payload, not the name. The 60-ton tag is the class; 54,500 kg is what the truck actually carries, which puts it alongside BEML’s existing diesel BH60 rather than above it. So this is a like-for-like driveline swap in a size Indian opencast coal already runs, not a new tier of machine.
The 36.4 cubic metre body then sets your loading tool. Filling it in five to seven passes wants a bucket in the 5 to 7 cubic metre band, which is a 70 to 100 tonne class hydraulic excavator. Pair it with a smaller shovel and you pay for payload you never load.
Our take: the 1,000 kWh pack is the gate, and it is a site-infrastructure question before it is a machine question. A battery that size needs serious high-tension supply and a charging plan built around your shift pattern, which is why BEML is selling a charging solution alongside the truck. A machine tied to a fixed charger is a captive-mine machine. It does not move between jobs the way a hired tipper does, the same economics we set out when JSW launched its Ampstar electric truck brand: electric heavy haulage pencils on closed-loop duty and struggles anywhere else.
Test the cost claim with arithmetic you control. At the standard 2.68 kg of CO2 per litre of diesel, the company-stated 130 tonnes a year works out to roughly 48,000 litres of fuel displaced per truck. Price that against your own power tariff and you have the honest version of the 40 to 60 per cent claim, which is a wide band precisely because it swings on tariff, diesel price and duty cycle. Until BEML publishes a price and a charging time, treat this as a demand signal for BEML and its Karnataka supply base rather than a machine you can budget for. BEML’s order book has been led by mining for several quarters, as its Q1 FY27 results showed, and electrification is where the public-sector miners are pushing.
What to watch
- A first order with a disclosed price. That is the number that turns the operating-cost claim into a real total-cost comparison.
- Charging time and gradeability figures. Both decide how many cycles a shift actually gets, and neither has been published.
- Whether the charging package is priced inside the truck or sold separately. On a 1,000 kWh machine that is not a small line item.

FAQ
Can you buy the BEML BH60-EV today?
Not yet, on the public record. BEML disclosed no price, no delivery window and no customer order when it showed the truck on 30 September 2026.
How much does the BH60-EV carry?
BEML states a 54,500 kg payload in a 36.4 cubic metre rock body. The 60-ton in the model name refers to the truck class, not the payload.
Is this the same as BEML’s 35-tonne electric dump truck?
No. That machine was launched on 10 April 2026 and sits in a smaller class. The BH60-EV is a separate, larger truck.
