Kobelco Construction Equipment India launched three excavators in the 19.1 to 24 tonne class in Mumbai on 23 October: the SK210, SK215LC and SK230XDLC. All three are built at the company’s Sri City plant in Andhra Pradesh and run a 150 HP Cummins F4.5 engine. That is the size most Indian contractors buy. If you are pricing a 20-tonne machine for road, canal or quarry work this season, there is now a third Kobelco nameplate to quote against Tata Hitachi, JCB, SANY and Komatsu. There is no price yet.
The quick facts
- Models: SK210, SK215LC and SK230XDLC, in the 19.1 to 24 tonne operating class (company-stated).
- Engine: 150 HP Cummins F4.5 CRDI on all three, with a power boost function (company-stated).
- Built at Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Kobelco says the plant can make about 3,500 machines a year and has built over 20,000 for more than 16 countries.
- Standard kit listed: GEOSCAN remote tracking, air-conditioning, LED work lights and longer hydraulic oil and filter change intervals. No price, model-wise weight or bucket size was published.
What did Kobelco launch?
Kobelco’s launch release, carried by NBM&CW on 23 October, describes the three machines as part of its “Value Excavation” pitch: Japanese design built locally. Managing Director Jun Hayama tied the launch to the company’s twenty years in India. Director Moses Eddy said Kobelco’s job “goes beyond selling and servicing of machines”. The release claims better digging forces than before but gives no figure, and it does not say when dealers will have stock.
What it means for buyers
Start with the model names. Our guide to reading excavator model numbers explains the pattern most makers follow. LC means a long undercarriage, which gives more stability on a slope or when lifting over the side. Kobelco uses XD for its heavy-duty builds, the ones meant for quarry and mining work. So this is three versions of one size: a standard machine, a long-carriage machine and a heavy-duty machine. They sit next to the SK220XDLC that Kobelco already sells.
The Cummins engine matters more than the badge. Cummins runs its own parts and service network in India. For an owner far from a Kobelco dealer, an engine their local mechanic already knows cuts the risk of a long breakdown. Longer hydraulic oil and filter intervals reduce service visits too, but Kobelco has not published the hours, so you cannot cost that saving yet.
Our take: do not book a machine against this launch until three numbers are on paper. You need the ex-showroom price for each variant, the operating weight and bucket size for each, and the warranty hours. Without them you cannot compare like with like against the 20-tonne machines on our comparison pages. Ask the dealer for a written quote that lists all three. Ask whether GEOSCAN tracking is free after the first year. A quarry owner looking at the SK230XDLC should also ask for the undercarriage and bucket wear specification, because that is what the heavy-duty tag should change.
What to watch
- Ex-showroom prices and model-wise operating weights from Kobelco dealers.
- The three models appearing on Kobelco India’s own range page, which still did not list them on launch day.
- Launch finance offers, which makers often attach to a new 20-tonne model in the festive months.
