What counts as building construction equipment?

Building construction equipment is the set of machines that takes a building from an empty plot to a finished frame. On most Indian sites the work runs in the same order. Backhoe loaders and small excavators clear the plot and dig the footings, the basement and the service trenches. A soil compactor firms up the plinth fill and the site roads.

The frame needs concrete. It arrives in transit mixers from a ready-mix plant, or a self-loading mixer makes it on site, and a stationary concrete pump pushes it up to each slab through a pipeline. Steel, blocks and formwork are moved with pick and carry cranes and telehandlers, and a skid steer loader keeps the site clear.

Several machines on a large building site are not listed on DesiMachines: tower cranes, passenger and material hoists, boom pumps, batching plants, piling rigs and scaffolding. The cards below cover the machines we do list.

Which building construction machines do buyers ask about most?

The order follows the enquiries buyers sent us over the last four months, with no more than two models from one brand.

Which brands make these machines?

The brands with the most models listed in these classes. Each name opens that brand's range.

Where is building work concentrated in India?

Urban housing gives the clearest picture of where the volume is. According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which runs Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), the most urban houses sanctioned under the scheme are in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, followed by Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Karnataka.

Public buildings such as offices, staff quarters, campuses and courts are tendered by CPWD, the Military Engineer Services, state public works departments and development authorities. Getting enlisted with them is covered in our guides to PWD contractor registration and MES contractor registration.

Building work is spread over many small sites, so hire demand follows the towns where the housing is going up. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and tenders for that state.

Who builds India’s large buildings?

Towers, hospitals, offices and campuses are built by EPC contractors working for developers and government bodies. Houses and small blocks are built by local contractors, who hire most of their machines. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Which machines are used in building construction?

Backhoe loaders and small excavators dig the foundations, transit mixers or self-loading mixers supply the concrete, stationary pumps place it on each slab, and pick and carry cranes and telehandlers lift steel, blocks and formwork. Tower cranes, hoists, boom pumps and piling rigs are used too, but they are not listed here.

Which excavator size suits a building plot?

A mini excavator up to 6 tonne fits narrow city plots and house footings. Machines of 6 to 15 tonne dig basements on larger plots, and deep basements on big projects usually need a 20 tonne class excavator loading tippers.

Should a builder use ready-mix or a self-loading mixer?

Where a ready-mix plant can reach the site, transit mixers bring tested concrete in large volumes, which suits slabs and high-rise work. A self-loading mixer suits sites far from a plant, small pours and rural jobs, because it weighs, mixes and pours its own concrete.

How is concrete taken up a tall building?

Most Indian sites use a stationary concrete pump with a pipeline that is extended up the building floor by floor. A truck-mounted boom pump can place concrete from outside on low and mid-rise blocks, but boom pumps are not listed here.

Telehandler or pick and carry crane for a building site?

A pick and carry crane lifts and shifts heavy loads at ground level and onto trucks. A telehandler reaches up and forward, so it places pallets of blocks, steel and formwork on upper floors and scaffold platforms. Many sites use both.

Can I finance or insure a machine for this work through DesiMachines?

The finance page compares lenders and lets you work out an EMI, and the insurance page explains what a machine policy covers. Both are linked on this page.
