L&T Heavy Engineering Push: Rs 18,600 Cr TN Pact

Larsen & Toubro signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government on June 10 committing Rs 186 billion (Rs 18,600 crore) across three projects expected to create 8,200 jobs. The largest slice — Rs 15,000 crore — expands L&T’s data centre business in Kancheepuram district. Another Rs 2,500 crore goes to an electronics and electronic systems plant in Coimbatore (2,000 jobs), and Rs 1,100 crore expands the Kattupalli shipbuilding complex in Tiruvallur (5,700 jobs), strengthening the state’s offshore wind fabrication base.

For India’s heavy engineering and construction ecosystem, the pact signals a fresh private capex cycle in the south: data centre campuses need fast-track civil works, piling and precast erection, while the Kattupalli expansion adds marine fabrication and heavy-lift activity. Officials say detailed project agreements and implementation schedules follow next.

What it means for buyers: Subcontractors around Chennai and Coimbatore should track L&T’s package tenders — data centre and shipyard jobs typically rent piling rigs, tower cranes and concreting equipment locally, creating near-term utilisation for fleet owners in Tamil Nadu.
