What counts as canal construction equipment?
Canal and dam work is earthwork first and concrete second. Excavators cut the canal section and dig the dam foundation. Dozers spread the fill and soil compactors roll the banks and the dam body layer by layer. Graders keep the road on the canal bank in shape. Then the concrete starts: transit mixers and concrete pumps feed the lining, the falls and regulators, the aqueducts and the barrage piers.
The work does not stop when the project is handed over. Canals and tanks silt up, and long-reach excavators clean them from the bank year after year.
Some machines on these sites are not listed on DesiMachines: canal lining pavers, draglines, dredgers, drilling and grouting rigs, and the tippers that carry the earth.
Where is irrigation and dam work concentrated in India?
Dams follow the rivers and the rainfall. According to the Central Water Commission’s National Register of Large Dams, Maharashtra has far more large dams than any other state, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Odisha come next. The same register shows Maharashtra with the most large dams under construction.
River links are the next wave. The National Water Development Agency records that the foundation stone of the Ken-Betwa link was laid at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, and that Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and the Centre signed the agreement for the modified Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal link. In Andhra Pradesh, the Polavaram Project Authority oversees the Polavaram Irrigation Project.
Each state page lists the machines, dealers and open tenders for that state.
Who awards and builds canal and dam work?
Most canal, dam and lift irrigation work is tendered by state water resources and irrigation departments and their corporations, with central bodies planning, funding or watching over the larger projects. The contractors below build them, and a fleet owner usually reaches the work through one of them or a sub-contractor. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.
