Caterpillar has introduced its next-generation 6040 hydraulic mining shovel, a 400-metric-tonne-class machine aimed at large mining and bulk-earthmoving fleets. The shovel is powered by twin 2,079-horsepower Cat C32B engines and can keep operating on a single engine when moving away from the face. An optional oil-change interval extension doubles engine oil change intervals from 500 hours to 1,000 hours.
The headline change is the hydraulic system. Instead of running pumps at maximum flow and pressure regardless of demand, the 6040 assigns individual pumps to deliver only the flow each function needs. Caterpillar says this on-demand approach cuts fuel use, heat and energy waste while extending component life, and rates the system 15% more efficient than shovels without it. The 6040 delivers 269,996 pound-feet of breakout force in face-shovel configuration.
What it means for buyers: Fleet owners weighing large shovels should price uptime and fuel per tonne, not sticker cost. Extended oil intervals and on-demand hydraulics directly cut operating cost over a machine’s life.
