Where is mining work concentrated in India?
Mining follows the mineral, so the work sits in belts, not evenly across the map. Coal comes mainly from Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra. Iron ore is mined in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Goa.
Limestone for cement runs through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Gujarat. Odisha has the largest bauxite reserves, Rajasthan has the zinc and lead, and the lignite is in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Stone quarries for aggregate sit near every large city, while the granite and marble belts run through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.
For a machine owner the belt matters because that is where the contract work, the hire demand and the buyers for a used machine are. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and tenders for that state.
Who are the big mine owners and contract miners in India?
Mine owners buy the largest machines themselves. Contract miners, called mine developers and operators (MDOs), and the sub-contractors under them buy and hire most of the rest, which is where a fleet owner usually finds work. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.
