About Go Digit

The company was incorporated in 2016 out of Pune, renamed Go Digit in 2017, and is registered with IRDAI under number 158, with its head office now in Bengaluru. It counts the global investor Fairfax among its backers, and in May 2024 it listed publicly on the NSE and BSE — a notable milestone for a young, technology-led insurer.

What makes it different from the older general insurers is its design. Go Digit was built from the ground up as a full-stack digital insurer, with simplified policy wording and an app-first way of buying and claiming. The scale is real, not just slick: it has settled around 9 lakh-plus claims in a single year and works with a garage network of more than 10,000. For an equipment owner who values speed and plain language over thick policy booklets, that is the draw.

Why insure with Go Digit

The reason most plant owners give it a look is the experience of dealing with it. Policies are written in simpler language, so you have a fairer chance of knowing what you actually bought before a loss happens. Buying, servicing and claiming are built around an app and a smartphone, which suits owners who are out on sites rather than sitting near a branch.

The cover is substantial behind the simplicity. Go Digit’s Contractors’ Plant & Machinery policy comes with published wordings and names exactly the sort of kit you run — dumpers, excavators, rollers, drilling machines. It also offers a confirmed commercial-vehicle line, which matters for road-going units. So you get a genuinely digital-first claims journey on top of a proper engineering product — handy for a contractor who would rather upload a few photos than wait days for an inspector to reach a far-off site.

Coverages available

Plant & Machinery (CPM)Accidental loss/damage — working, idle or in maintenance
Erection All Risk (EAR)Install, test & commissioning jobs
Machinery BreakdownInternal electrical/mechanical failure

The core annual cover is Contractors’ Plant & Machinery (CPM), and Go Digit publishes the policy wordings so you can read exactly what you are getting. It covers sudden, accidental physical loss or damage to listed plant — at work, idle or being shifted for maintenance — from fire, theft and burglary, accidental impact, overturning and natural events such as flood and storm. Each machine sits on the schedule with its own sum insured, normally on a replacement-value basis.

The wider engineering range is broad. Go Digit writes Contractors’ All Risk (CAR) for civil works and Erection All Risk (EAR) for installation and commissioning, both time-bound to the contract. It also offers Machinery Breakdown for the internal electrical or mechanical failures that CPM excludes, a Boiler and Pressure Plant cover, and an Electronic Equipment cover for sensitive electronics. For machines that travel under their own power on public roads, its commercial-vehicle product provides the motor side. Add-ons such as third-party liability, debris removal, escalation and an anywhere-in-India extension can be discussed when the policy is set up.

What's usually not covered

Even a simply worded policy has exclusions, and reading them early avoids surprises. You carry the agreed excess on each loss. CPM does not pay for normal wear and tear, rust, corrosion or gradual deterioration, and it excludes consumables and wear parts — tyres, ropes, belts, drill bits, fuel and lubricants. Pure internal breakdown is excluded unless Machinery Breakdown is added. Also outside the cover: damage from overloading or use beyond rated capacity, wilful negligence, war and nuclear perils, transit between locations unless extended, and the on-road liability of a road-registered vehicle, which belongs with a motor policy.

What it's likely to cost

Typical annual premium
0.5%–1.5% of insured value
Illustration
₹50L machine → ₹25,000–₹75,000/yr + 18% GST

No insurer can fix a plant premium in advance — the risk sets the price. As an indicative guide, annual CPM rates in India usually land between 0.5% and 1.5% of the machine’s insured value. As an illustration only, a machine insured for ₹50 lakh might run roughly ₹25,000 to ₹75,000 a year before GST. The figure shifts with the type and age of the machine, its insured value, the terrain it works (mining, tunnelling and hilly sites rate higher), your claims record, the excess you accept and the add-ons you choose. A higher voluntary excess pulls the premium down. The real number always needs a quote — and that is where Desi Machines comes in.

How claims work

This is where Go Digit stands out. The claims process is smartphone-enabled and largely paperless — registering a claim can take about seven minutes. For motor claims especially, the insurer sends a self-survey link by SMS or email so you can upload photos and video of the damage yourself, instead of waiting for an inspector to arrive. Everything runs through the Digit app, and the motor helpline is 1800-258-5956. For larger engineering and CPM losses the usual IRDAI surveyor process still applies, so keep the standard file ready: policy copy, claim form, registration papers where applicable, the FIR for theft, repair estimates and dated photographs. Where liability is clear, an on-account payment can be released before final settlement so the machine — and the job — gets moving again.

Rules & paperwork worth knowing

The same regulatory groundwork applies whichever insurer you pick. Only IRDAI-registered companies can issue these policies, Go Digit included, and every policy carries a UIN. The premium attracts 18% GST; the September 2025 GST 2.0 change removed the tax only on individual life and health cover, so commercial and engineering insurance stays at 18%, with input tax credit usually available to a GST-registered business. A road-going machine such as a mobile crane, dumper or certain backhoe loaders must be registered and carry mandatory third-party motor insurance alongside CPM; a machine that never leaves an enclosed site generally need not. And because site work is hazardous, an Employees’ Compensation (Workmen’s Compensation) policy is the standard cover for operators and crew.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can I register a claim with Go Digit?
Claim registration is built to take about seven minutes through the app or online. For motor claims you may get a self-survey link by SMS or email to upload photos and video yourself. Larger engineering and CPM losses still go through the usual IRDAI surveyor process.
Is the self-survey available for plant and CPM claims?
Self-survey by photo and video is used mainly on motor claims. For higher-value plant and CPM losses, an IRDAI-licensed surveyor is normally appointed to inspect the damage, so keep your estimates, the FIR for theft and photographs ready.
Can I insure a used or second-hand machine?
Yes. Used plant can be covered, usually after a pre-insurance inspection, with the sum insured set on the machine's current replacement value. The rate can differ from a brand-new unit.
My dumper runs on public roads — do I need motor cover too?
Yes. CPM excludes on-road liability for road-registered vehicles. A road-going machine needs separate motor cover under the Motor Vehicles Act, and Go Digit's commercial-vehicle product can provide it alongside CPM.
Is GST charged on the premium, and can my business claim it back?
Yes, at 18%. The 2025 GST exemption applied only to individual life and health policies, not commercial insurance. A GST-registered business can usually reclaim the 18% as input tax credit.
Does Desi Machines issue the policy or does Go Digit?
Go Digit issues the policy and decides the claim under its own wording and underwriting. Desi Machines helps you get quotes, compare cover and complete the formalities — we are a facilitator, not the insurer.

Desi Machines is a facilitator that helps equipment owners connect with IRDAI-registered insurers. We are not an insurer and do not issue policies — cover, eligibility, premium and claim decisions rest with the insurer under its policy terms. Premium figures shown are indicative, not quotes, and 18% GST applies. Please confirm current terms with the insurer before you buy.
