NH-10 Rangpo-Ranipool Upgrade: Rs 993.64 Crore Sanctioned for Sikkim Hill Road

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 993.64 crore to rebuild the Rangpo-Ranipool stretch of NH-10, the main road into Gangtok, as a two-lane highway with paved shoulders. This is not a widening job with some extra drainage. The scope reads like a structures package: tunnels, viaducts, bridges, cut-and-cover sections and slope protection on a corridor known for slides and sinking ground. For contractors with hill experience, it is a dated new job in the northeast.

The quick facts

  • Rs 993.64 crore sanctioned for the Rangpo-Ranipool section of NH-10 in Sikkim, announced by Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on 7 October 2026.
  • The road becomes two-lane with paved shoulders, with tunnels, viaducts, bridges, cut-and-cover sections and slope-protection works.
  • Two of the reports name NHIDCL as the agency. Length, contract mode, contractor and timeline have not been disclosed.

What did the Centre approve?

Gadkari announced the sanction on X on 7 October. India Today NE, Business Today, Northeast Live, Daijiworld and EquityPandit all carried the same figure and scope the same day or the next morning. The minister said the upgraded road would give safer and faster access to Gangtok, help tourism and farm produce move, and strengthen defence supply lines. None of the reports gives a length, so we have not worked out a cost per km.

What does this mean for equipment buyers?

Start with what the terrain allows. On a narrow Himalayan road the working width caps machine size, and contractors usually run excavators in roughly the 13 to 21 tonne class rather than big mass-excavation units. Most of the money here sits in structures and stabilisation, not in moving earth. Viaduct and bridge foundations need drilling rigs and cranes for girder and segment lifts. Tunnels and cut-and-cover sections need rock breakers, excavators and a steady concrete supply. Slope protection, the least visible part, keeps drill rigs, shotcrete units and small loaders busy for long periods.

NH-10 is also the road that keeps Sikkim supplied, so it will stay open while it is rebuilt. Expect staged work in short stretches beside live traffic. That favours compact machines that can pull aside quickly and tippers making short trips. Remoteness counts too. Once a fleet is in the Teesta valley it tends to stay for the whole job, so spares, operator housing and diesel logistics become part of the contractor’s costing.

The weather sets the calendar. Monsoon rain usually slows hill road work from June to September, so most earthwork and foundation progress will come in the October to May dry seasons.

Our take: this probably reads as a utilisation story more than a buying spree. Firms already running hill packages in Sikkim and north Bengal are best placed, and new buying, if it comes, is likely to be drill rigs and slope-protection kit rather than heavy earthmovers. It also lands a week after the Rs 1,175.59 crore Teesta bridge sanction at Sevoke on the same highway, which puts more than Rs 2,100 crore of new NH-10 work into one corridor. The two jobs could end up competing for the same operators and low-bed trailers. More on fleet choice for this kind of work is in our bridge and tunnel equipment overview and the road construction equipment guide.

What to watch

  • The NHIDCL bid notice, which should give the length, the mode (EPC or HAM) and the completion period.
  • Whether the tunnels and viaducts go out as one package or are split from the road and slope works.
  • The winning contractor and how much of its fleet is already working in the region.

FAQ

How much has the Centre sanctioned for NH-10 Rangpo to Ranipool?

Rs 993.64 crore, announced by Nitin Gadkari on 7 October 2026, to upgrade the stretch to two lanes with paved shoulders.

What does the NH-10 Rangpo-Ranipool project include?

Tunnels, viaducts, bridges, cut-and-cover sections and slope protection for stretches prone to landslides and sinking.

Who will build it and when?

No contractor or timeline has been announced. Two reports name NHIDCL as the agency, so watch for its bid notice.
