Uttar Pradesh has approved Rs 182.16 crore for a raised embankment on the left bank of the Gomti in Lucknow, running about 5.5 km from IIM Road to Pakka Pul (Harding Bridge), plus Rs 148.87 crore for 12 pumping stations. The bund is the earthwork job. Faizullaganj went under water this month, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) says tenders should follow next month, and the target is to finish most of the bund before the next monsoon. That squeezes one riverbank job into a single dry season.
The quick facts
- Embankment: Rs 182.16 crore estimated cost, Gomti left bank, IIM Road to Pakka Pul (Harding Bridge), about 5.5 km, raising and strengthening with a service road alongside.
- Drainage: Rs 148.87 crore for 12 pumping stations in the city.
- Approved by the UP government as part of a larger batch of development authority works; reported 23-24 October 2026.
- Executing agency: LDA. Tenders expected next month, per LDA vice-chairman Prathmesh Kumar.
What Lucknow approved
ETV Bharat reported the approval as part of a list issued by the state’s Housing and Urban Planning department covering several development authorities, with the two Lucknow projects together at about Rs 331 crore. Amar Ujala carried the LDA’s account: the bund will be raised and strengthened with a service road beside it, and the authority plans to float both tenders next month. The department has also asked authorities to file signed cost details within a week, so treat the figures as approved estimates, not contract values. Pumping station capacities differ between the two reports, so we leave them out.
What does a 5.5 km bund mean for machine owners?
Rs 182.16 crore over 5.5 km works out to roughly Rs 33 crore per km. Compare that with Delhi’s Yamuna flood wall, sanctioned on 23 October at about Rs 21 crore per km for an RCC wall. A plain earth bund should come in well below a concrete wall, so the higher Lucknow rate points to the service road and slope protection carrying a big share. No split has been published, and that gap matters to anyone pricing the job.
The earthwork itself is a filling job. Soil has to be won from a borrow area, hauled in through city roads, spread in layers and compacted on a slope. That means excavators at the borrow pit, tippers on short shuttles, a dozer to spread and a soil compactor to roll each lift. A motor grader and a paving set come in later for the service road. The pumping stations are sump and building work, so they lean on small excavators, dewatering pumps and concrete.
Our take: with tenders in November and a pre-monsoon target, the contractor gets roughly seven working months. That favours hiring extra tippers and rollers for a short, intense spell over buying new. Hire fleets in Uttar Pradesh with idle compaction plant this winter should watch the LDA tender closely.
What to watch
- The LDA tender notices for the bund and the pumping stations, with package values and completion periods.
- Any published split between earthwork, slope protection and the service road.
- Itemised costs for the other cities in the same batch, including Varanasi, Bareilly and Saharanpur.
