Chhattisgarh road projects worth Rs 672.22 crore are about to move: the public works department has approved tenders for 24 road and bridge jobs, and the state says work starts once the rains end. For road-equipment owners in central Chhattisgarh, this is a batch of small, scattered jobs landing in one dry season. That makes it a hire and utilisation story more than a buying one.
The quick facts
- Batch: tenders approved for 24 works totalling Rs 672.22 crore, announced by the Chhattisgarh government on 2 October 2026 under Deputy Chief Minister and PWD minister Arun Sao.
- Mix: 12 widening and strengthening jobs (Rs 405.49 crore), 7 new roads (Rs 162.45 crore), 3 upgradations (Rs 78.97 crore) and 2 high-level river bridges with approaches (Rs 25.31 crore).
- Biggest job: Kanker-Bhanupratappur-Sambalpur state road, 36.80 km of widening and strengthening with bridges and culverts, at Rs 85.83 crore.
- Timing: construction to start after the monsoon. The release names no contractors.
What the state approved
Vistaar News and Chhattisgarh Batchit both carried the government’s itemised list on 2 October. We added up the 24 line items and they come to exactly Rs 672.22 crore, so the list is complete. The new roads include an 8 km four-lane road with bridges at Dongargarh in Rajnandgaon and a 17.61 km Jhal-Nagpura road in Bilaspur district. The two bridges cross the Arpa (Rs 17.63 crore) and the Kharun (Rs 7.68 crore). Dhamtari gets six of the 24 works and Raigarh four, worth about Rs 145 crore between them.
Which machines will these jobs need?
Six rupees in ten go to widening and strengthening existing roads. That is staged work beside live traffic, carried out by a paving train rather than a big earthmoving fleet: motor graders for shoulders and base courses, tandem and vibratory rollers, a paver, a hot-mix plant and short-haul tippers. Backhoe loaders handle culverts and drains. The full set is on our road construction equipment page.
The cost per km shows how varied the batch is. The 23 km strengthening and bituminisation job on the Rajnandgaon-Dhamtari-Nagri Sihawa-Borai route works out to about Rs 51 lakh per km, which is resurfacing territory with no earthwork to speak of. The 5 km Raigarh-Loing-Mahapalli four-laning with street lighting works out to about Rs 11.9 crore per km, more than 20 times as much. Same batch, completely different machine needs.
Our take: the average job is about Rs 28 crore, and none is above Rs 86 crore. Uttar Pradesh’s 36-project PWD batch last month averaged about Rs 86 crore a job. Jobs this size go to regional contractors who mostly hire, so the batch is unlikely to push many outright machine purchases. The pressure is more likely on availability. Six Dhamtari jobs and four Raigarh jobs starting in the same few months will compete for the same roller and paver operators, and rental rates in those districts could firm from November. That is our reading, not a certainty.
What to watch
- Work orders and the winning contractors, which the state has not published yet.
- Whether the Arpa and Kharun bridges need pile or well foundations. That decides whether piling rigs and cranes come in.
- How fast work starts after the rains. Chhattisgarh’s dry window runs roughly October to mid-June.
