What did Godrej launch?
- Godrej Enterprises Group’s Material Handling Equipment (MHE) business launched what it calls India’s first Multi-Ion battery for electric forklifts.
- Company-stated: up to 5,000 charge cycles (about 60% above conventional lithium-ion); seven-year warranty; 5,000+ hours of real-world validation.
- Company-stated: up to 25% lower total cost of ownership, zero maintenance, fast and opportunity charging, and no rare-earth materials.
- Designed to run in ambient temperatures above 45°C — built for Indian conditions.
Why does a longer-life battery matter for buyers?
Godrej Enterprises Group introduced a “Multi-Ion” battery for its electric forklifts, which it says is India’s first, per Construction World. The company says the pack delivers up to 5,000 life cycles — roughly 60% more than conventional lithium-ion — with fast and opportunity charging, zero maintenance and no rare-earth content. It claims up to 25% lower total cost of ownership, operation above 45°C, more than 5,000 hours of validation and a seven-year warranty. All figures are company-stated, not independently verified.
Do the cost-of-ownership claims stack up?
For warehouses, ports, and auto and FMCG plants running electric forklift fleets, battery economics decide the budget. Lead-acid is cheap upfront but needs watering, swapping and long charge windows; standard lithium-ion cuts that but costs more. A longer-cycle pack with opportunity charging — if the claims hold — could mean fewer battery replacements over a forklift’s working life and less mid-shift downtime.
The 45°C-plus claim is the one that matters most in India, where a lot of warehousing is not air-conditioned. Battery life and safety usually derate in heat, so ask Godrej for cycle-life and warranty figures at high ambient temperature, not just lab numbers.
Compare total cost of ownership, not sticker price. Ask for the 25% lower-TCO claim in writing against your own duty cycle, shift pattern and electricity tariff, and check whether the seven-year warranty covers capacity retention (say, 80%) or only outright failure. For mixed fleets, confirm the pack fits your existing trucks and chargers before committing.
DesiMachines view: A domestic, longer-life battery option could lower the cost of going electric in material handling and may pressure import-reliant rivals on price and lead time — but because the numbers are company-stated, buyers should pilot one or two trucks on a real shift before any fleet-wide switch. For the wider picture, our guide to electric forklifts in India covers the types, capacity classes and the lead-acid against lithium decision.
What to watch before you buy?
- Independent or third-party cycle-life and safety certification of the pack.
- Whether Godrej offers it on rental or battery-as-a-service, which lowers entry cost.
- Service and spares coverage in your region — uptime lives or dies on it.
