What counts as material handling equipment?
Material handling equipment is any machine that moves, lifts, loads or stacks goods between the point they arrive and the point they are used or sent on. In India that work happens in grain godowns, factory stores, logistics parks, rail sidings, container depots and the stores yard of every large construction site.
The classic machines of a warehouse are forklifts, reach stackers, overhead EOT cranes and conveyors. DesiMachines does not list those. What we do list are the machines that handle material outdoors and on rough ground: pick and carry cranes for lifting and shifting heavy loads, telehandlers for placing pallets and bags at height, wheel loaders and skid steer loaders for bulk material such as sand, coal, grain and fertiliser, and backhoe loaders for the yard that needs one machine for many small jobs.
Where is material handling work concentrated in India?
Grain storage is the largest single public warehousing network. According to the Department of Food and Public Distribution, the most central pool storage capacity for foodgrain is in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, followed by Uttar Pradesh. Those godowns load and unload grain all year round, and the peak comes after each harvest.
For factory and logistics park work, the LEADS 2024 report of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade names the states with the best logistics performance. Among coastal states they are Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha and Tamil Nadu. Among landlocked states they are Haryana, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and tenders for that state.
Who runs India’s warehouses and logistics parks?
Public bodies own most of the grain storage and many rail terminals, while private logistics companies run the factory warehouses and parks. Both hire loaders, cranes and telehandlers through contractors. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.
