Alkapuri ROB Vadodara: Rs 166.5 Crore for a Four-Lane Grade Separator

5 min read

Indian Railways has sanctioned a four-lane road over bridge at Alkapuri in Vadodara at Rs 166.5 crore. For anyone who moves plant across central Vadodara, the number that matters is not the sanction. It is 3.0 metres, the clearance of the road under bridge this grade separator is meant to relieve, and the reason a low-bed with an excavator on it cannot use that crossing today.

The quick facts

  • Rs 166.5 crore sanctioned for a four-lane ROB at Alkapuri, Vadodara Division, Western Railway, announced 24 September 2026.
  • Cost shared 50:50 with the Gujarat government, at roughly Rs 83.28 crore each. Doubling that stated share gives Rs 166.55 crore, so the headline figure is rounded.
  • The existing Alkapuri road under bridge has about 3.0 m of vertical clearance and waterlogs through the monsoon.
  • Peak-hour flow is put above 1,600 PCU per hour. The link runs between Alkapuri and Kalaghoda and feeds the railway station, the GSRTC bus stand and the coming bullet-train station.
  • No span length, deck width, start date or contractor has been published.

What Indian Railways approved

The decision came from the Ministry of Railways and was carried on 24 September by Swarajya, by Asianet Newsable running ANI copy, and by the rail trade desk HelloRail, all three reproducing the same ministry note and agreeing to the rupee on the shared halves. The ministry frames it as a capacity upgrade on an existing crossing, delivered without disturbing train operations. Because no length was released, there is no Rs per km to compute, and we are not going to invent one. What can be ranked is the sanction itself: this is Gujarat’s second four-lane ROB clearance inside a week, after the Rs 133 crore Udhna-Ukai-Songadh bridge.

What does a Rs 166.5 crore grade separator actually buy?

Not pavement. A road over bridge carries almost no mileage to surface, so the value sits in foundations, piers, girders and the two approach ramps. That is a concrete job with a short, sharp steel-erection episode inside it, and the fleet follows that shape.

Expect piling rigs for the pier foundations, then a crawler or telescopic crane sized for girder erection over live, electrified track. Vadodara sits on the Mumbai-Delhi trunk route, so erection runs inside granted possession and power blocks, a handful of nights rather than a continuous programme. The approaches are the opposite: months of steady work on a congested city street, which is backhoe loader and compact excavator territory, with soil and tandem compactors on the embankment and tippers on short hauls. Deck and substructure pours pull a batching plant and transit mixers for the full term.

Our take: the own-versus-hire line falls where it usually does on urban ROB work. The heavy erection crane earns its keep for a few possession nights and should be hired with its crew; the approach plant runs long enough to justify ownership for a contractor already working in Gujarat. The wrinkle this month is competition. Two four-lane ROB sanctions in one state inside a week means the same girder crews, low-beds and heavy cranes get chased twice, and that tends to show up as rate firmness rather than discounts.

One point worth stating plainly, because no carrier made it: 3.0 m is below the travelling height of a low-bed carrying a 20-tonne class excavator, below a transit mixer and below a truck-mounted boom pump. Machines crossing Vadodara east to west have been detouring around that constraint for years. A grade separator over the tracks has no headroom limit at all, so this stays useful to local fleet owners long after the construction contract closes.

What to watch

  • The Western Railway and Gujarat R&B tender for this ROB, and how it splits into packages. A sanction is not an award.
  • Whether the deck is precast girder or cast in situ. That one decision sets crane capacity against batching volume.
  • Whether the schedule gets pinned to the Vadodara high-speed rail station timeline, which would compress approach work into a single dry season.

FAQ

When will work start on the Alkapuri ROB?

No date has been published. The 24 September announcement is a sanction, not an award. The tender, the contractor and the schedule are all still to come.

How much of the Rs 166.5 crore is machine work?

Railways has not published a head-wise split, so any figure would be a guess. What is safe to say is that a grade separator carries no pavement mileage, so the value sits in piling, substructure, girders and the approach ramps.

Which machines does an urban road over bridge pull?

Piling rigs for the foundations, a crawler or telescopic crane for girder erection in possession blocks, a batching plant with transit mixers for the deck, and backhoe loaders, compact excavators, compactors and tippers on the approaches.
