Gurugram Metro Phase 2 cleared its last state hurdle on 1 October: the Haryana government approved the Rs 1,662 crore civil works package for the Sector 9 to Cyber City stretch, and Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) says it will float the tender in the first week of October. For piling, crane and concrete-plant owners in the NCR, this is the next big elevated-metro job to bid for, and the calendar matters more than the headline number.
The quick facts
- Package: Rs 1,662 crore civil works for Gurugram Metro Phase 2, Sector 9 to DLF Cyber City, cleared by the Haryana government on 1 October 2026.
- Route: an elevated corridor with 14 stations through Old Gurugram, including Ashok Vihar, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar and Sectors 22 and 23A.
- Next step: GMRL floats the tender in the first week of October; no contractor has been chosen yet.
- Target: the full corridor (Phase 1 plus Phase 2) is aimed at 2029.
What Haryana approved
A senior GMRL official told DNA that the state had approved the tender for civil construction of phase two. Swarajya reports the package covers the elevated viaduct, stations, track and allied civil works, including double-decker stretches at Bajghera and Old Delhi Road, and that signalling, electrical, traction and design sit outside it. This tender has slipped before. In June, after the World Bank cleared the documents, Swarajya put it at about Rs 1,400 crore and said it would float within a week. It didn’t. Rs 1,400 crore plus 18 per cent GST comes to roughly today’s figure. The desks disagree on length: DNA and Swarajya print 15.3 km, India.com prints 14.5 km. They also give different revised totals for the whole project, so we are leaving both out.
What does this mean for equipment owners?
On the two published lengths, the package works out to roughly Rs 109 to 115 crore per km. Swarajya says the Rs 1,662 crore includes 18 per cent GST. For comparison, the L&T civil award on the Noida Aqua Line extensions came to about Rs 87 crore per km across 10 stations. Per station, the two jobs land close together, around Rs 120 crore each. So the higher per-km rate here comes mostly from station density (14 stations on roughly 15 km) and the double-decker sections, not from pricier viaduct. One caveat: Gurugram’s figure is an estimate before bidding, while Noida’s is an accepted bid, so treat the comparison as a rough guide.
The machine list is the standard elevated-metro set, at scale. Hydraulic piling rigs come first for pier foundations. Heavy crawler cranes follow for pier caps and U-girder or segment erection. A dedicated batching plant, a fleet of transit mixers and concrete pumps run for the whole contract. Excavators and backhoe loaders handle pile caps and utility shifting along congested roads.
Our take: India.com expects the tender process to take more than four months. If it does, the award lands around February 2027, which puts mobilisation into the Feb to May dry window. NCR construction curbs under GRAP usually bite from November to January. Phase 1’s civil contractor, the Dilip Buildcon and Ranjit Buildcon joint venture, is already on site along the same corridor with piling and girder work under way. That makes Phase 1 the obvious source of hired cranes and rigs, and a likely bidder. Owners renting into Phase 1 should price for a second job starting next door, not a gap.
What to watch
- The tender notice itself: bid due date, package split, and whether the double-decker sections are bid separately.
- Bidder count and the L1 price against Rs 1,662 crore. A deep discount usually means contractors hire rather than buy plant.
- Phase 1 progress on girder erection, which decides when its cranes and rigs come free.
