The transit mixer driver salary has a legal floor in every state, and two states name the job outright. Himachal Pradesh lists the Mixer Driver as skilled at Rs 14,790 a month (Rs 493 a day) from 1 April 2025. Delhi’s skilled rate is Rs 22,411 a month. Telangana paid a heavy vehicle driver Rs 15,110 a month for April to September 2026. Government schedules of rates price the same driver at Rs 792 to Rs 965 a day in Tamil Nadu and Rs 960 in Puducherry. Overtime is at least double the normal rate.
The plant loads the drum at six in the morning. By the time the mixer reaches a slab pour forty kilometres away, the driver has already spent an hour in traffic and will spend another waiting for the pump to be ready. That wait is why the job pays the way it does, and why owners who hire on a flat monthly figure often get the arithmetic wrong.
Job boards quote mixer driver pay for Dubai, Saudi Arabia and California alongside India, which makes them useless for setting a wage here. This piece starts from the documents an Indian employer is actually bound by, the state wage notifications, and then the labour rates governments use when they price concrete work.
Transit mixer driver salary: the legal floor by state
Minimum wages are fixed by each state for each scheduled employment. Only a few schedules name the mixer driver. Where they do not, the driver falls into the band for a similar job of the same skill; Himachal’s notification says so in as many words.
| State and document | Job line | Band | Floor | In force |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Himachal Pradesh, notification Shram(A)4-1/2024, roads and building schedule | Mixer Driver / Mixer Operator | Skilled | Rs 14,790 a month; Rs 493 a day | From 1 Apr 2025 |
| Himachal Pradesh, same schedule | Cleaner, tractor, road roller and concrete mixer | Un-skilled | Rs 12,750 a month; Rs 425 a day | From 1 Apr 2025 |
| Delhi, order dated 15 Apr 2025 (all scheduled employments) | No jobs named | Skilled | Rs 22,411 a month; Rs 862 a day | From 1 Apr 2025 |
| Telangana, construction of projects schedule | Heavy Vehicle Driver | Conveyance | Rs 15,110 a month | 1 Apr to 30 Sep 2026 |
| Telangana, same schedule | Medium Vehicle Driver | Conveyance | Rs 14,451 a month | 1 Apr to 30 Sep 2026 |
| Kerala, dams schedule, G.O.(P) 16/2021/LBR | Pump Driver, Mixer Driver | Group D | Rs 700 a day basic, plus DA | From 5 Feb 2021 |
Read the table with three points in mind. Himachal’s text says “Mixer Driver”, not transit mixer, and it puts the job in the same skilled band as an excavator or batching plant operator; the higher band in that schedule covers road roller and bulldozer drivers. Delhi names no occupations, so placing a mixer driver in its skilled band follows the logic of the other states rather than Delhi’s own text. Telangana’s figures are for a period that ended on 30 September; its October 2026 rates were not posted when we checked.
Himachal also adds 25% in its Scheduled Tribal Areas and 20% for work inside tunnels. A mixer feeding a hydro or tunnel project in the hills starts from a higher floor than one on a city slab.
Why the driver line pays more than the mixer line
Government departments publish a schedule of rates every year or two to price public works. Its labour table is not a wage law, and it is not a pay survey. It is the day rate the state assumes when it estimates what a contractor’s labour costs. That still makes it the most useful benchmark there is, because it is official, dated and specific.
| Schedule | Job line | Day rate |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu SOR 2025-26 (from 22 Jul 2025) | Driver (Heavy Duty), skilled band | Rs 965 |
| Tamil Nadu SOR 2025-26 | Mixer Operator (including concrete mixer), semi-skilled band | Rs 832 |
| Tamil Nadu SOR 2025-26 | Mixer Driver, semi-skilled band | Rs 792 |
| Puducherry PSR 2024-25 (from 14 Aug 2024) | Driver (for road roller, concrete mixer, truck etc.) | Rs 960 |
| Chhattisgarh WRD SOR 2025 | Operator Tipper / Dumper / Transit mixer, skilled band | Rs 456 (from a Sep 2024 wage order) |
The Tamil Nadu Schedule of Rates 2025-26 shows the gap clearly. A “Mixer Driver” is semi-skilled at Rs 792 a day, while a “Driver (Heavy Duty)” is skilled at Rs 965. A driver taking a loaded multi-axle truck through city traffic with a turning drum is doing the second job, whatever the payroll calls him. If you run mixers, put your drivers on the heavy-duty driver line. If you drive one, that is the line to ask about. Tamil Nadu adds 10% to labour rates inside Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore corporation limits and Hosur taluk.
Chhattisgarh’s water resources schedule is the only official document we found that names the transit mixer in a wage band. It lists the operator as skilled and the transit mixer helper as semi-skilled. Its rupee figures come from a labour commissioner order of September 2024 and will have moved since.
The licence, the age and the certificate
A truck-mounted transit mixer carries concrete on public roads for delivery. That makes it a goods carriage, and a goods carriage is a transport vehicle under the Motor Vehicles Act. Three rules follow from that.
- No one under 20 may drive a transport vehicle in a public place (section 4(2) of the Act).
- A licence to drive one needs a driving certificate from a recognised driving school or establishment (section 9(4)).
- The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 deleted the Act’s reference to a minimum educational qualification for that licence.
Skill training is a separate question. The Infrastructure Equipment Skill Council’s “Transit and Self-Loading Mixer Operator” qualification (IES/Q0118) sits at NSQF level 4, asks for a minimum age of 20, and describes the job as driving the mixer, loading it as per the mix design and discharging concrete at site. It is still listed on the National Qualifications Register, but its validity date of 17 October 2022 has passed. Treat a certificate under it as proof of training, not as a licence.
What lifts pay above the floor
The floor is the minimum an employer can pay without breaking the law. What a driver actually takes home depends on things the notification does not see.
Overtime is double, by law. Section 14 of the Code on Wages, 2019 says hours worked beyond a normal working day must be paid at no less than twice the normal rate. The Code came into force on 21 November 2025, and section 69(2) keeps the existing state wage notifications alive under it. A driver who waits three hours for a pump and then finishes the pour late has worked overtime.
Trips per day matter more than kilometres. Concrete has a limited time from batching to placement, which is why the economics of running a transit mixer turn on round trips. Plants and fleet owners often pay a trip allowance on top of the monthly wage. That allowance is a private arrangement; the wage floor still applies to the base.
Night pours carry a premium in the government schedules too. Tamil Nadu allows an extra 25% on labour for night work, including bridge work, in corporation and municipal areas. Metro, flyover and high-rise pours run at night in most cities, and drivers on those jobs can ask for the same treatment.
The progression is short and clear. The skill council’s ladder runs from transit mixer operator to senior operator, master operator and then supervisor of plant and machinery. A driver who learns to run the drum drive, wash-out and daily checks properly is the one a fleet owner keeps. Our wider guide to heavy equipment operator salary in India shows where the other machine jobs sit.
What a driver costs the mixer owner
For an owner, the driver’s wage is a fixed cost that runs on idle days too. On a 28-tonne-class mixer such as the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820 RMC, the BharatBenz 2828C RMC or the Tata Prima 2830.K REPTO, the wage is small beside diesel and EMI, but a driver who quits mid-season parks the truck. Paying above the floor is cheaper than a week of a standing mixer.
The government schedules give a useful cross-check. Puducherry’s schedule sets a transit mixer hire charge of Rs 1,350 an hour and says its hire charges include the operating staff, diesel and lubricants. Tamil Nadu’s highways annexure prices a transit mixer at Rs 1,039.50 an hour on an eight-hour day. When you quote hire to a contractor, the driver’s wage, overtime and allowance all have to fit inside that hourly figure. Our note on the labour rate per day in India explains how a notified floor becomes a bid line.
If you are adding mixers to the fleet, compare transit mixer models and prices, and check commercial vehicle and equipment finance before you sign.
The bottom line
There is no single national figure for a transit mixer driver salary. There is a legal floor in your state, and in most states a skilled-band floor is the right one: Rs 14,790 a month in Himachal Pradesh, Rs 22,411 in Delhi, Rs 15,110 for a heavy vehicle driver in Telangana’s April to September 2026 schedule. Overtime at double the normal rate, night work, trip allowances and steady employment are what move pay above it. Owners who price hire from the government schedules should remember that those hourly rates already carry the driver.
