Highway Projects Awarded in H1 FY27 Jump 63% to 2,236 km: MoSPI

Reviewed by 4 min read

National highway projects awarded in the first half of FY27 rose 62.9 per cent to 2,236.3 km, according to MoSPI’s quarterly infrastructure update released on 16 October. These are awards, not finished road. For anyone who owns or hires out graders, rollers and excavators, though, awarded kilometres are the earliest hard number on next year’s earthwork, because that is the work that has to mobilise once appointed dates come through.

The quick facts

  • National highways awarded, April to September 2026: 2,236.3 km, up 62.9 per cent year on year (MoSPI PAIMANA dashboard, quarterly update of 16 October 2026).
  • That growth implies roughly 1,373 km awarded in the same half of FY26, a weak base (our arithmetic from the published figures).
  • Electronic toll transactions: 225.2 crore, up 24.1 per cent; toll value Rs 36,994.5 crore, up 11.7 per cent.
  • Cargo at major ports, April to August: 390.4 million tonnes, up 7.2 per cent.

What MoSPI published

The figures come from the quarterly refresh of MoSPI’s PAIMANA performance-monitoring dashboard, which now tracks 184 indicators across roads, railways, power, aviation, telecom and ports. ANI, IANS and The Pioneer each carried the highway number on 16 October and agree on it. The ministry’s own note says the figure counts new projects awarded, not road built or completed. It gives no rupee value, no split between NHAI and the ministry’s other agencies, and no breakdown by HAM or EPC.

What does a 63 per cent jump in awards mean for machine demand?

It means the pipeline is refilling after a thin year, and that the effect on site is still ahead of us. An award is a letter of acceptance. Before a contractor can move earth it needs an appointed date, which depends on land, utility shifting and, on HAM jobs, financial closure. That gap usually runs to several months, so most of these 2,236 km will turn into work fronts late in FY27 and into FY28.

The pace still looks modest in absolute terms. Six months of awards works out to about 12 km a day of new highway put out to contractors. Better than last year, but short of earlier peak years, so read it as a recovery rather than a boom.

When those fronts open, the first machines on site are the earthwork set: excavators and tippers for cut and borrow, motor graders for formation and soil compactors for every layer. The paving train arrives after that. Our road construction equipment guide maps which class works at which stage.

The toll numbers tell a smaller story. Transactions grew about twice as fast as toll value, so the average electronic toll per crossing fell to roughly Rs 164 from about Rs 183 a year earlier, by our arithmetic. The release does not explain why.

Our take: the useful signal is timing, not volume. Contractors who won packages this half will be lining up fleets for the dry season after next monsoon, which is when hire rates for graders and compactors tend to firm. Owners deciding whether to add a machine now may get better terms buying before that demand reaches the market. That is a reading of the cycle, not a forecast MoSPI has made.

What to watch

  • Appointed dates on the packages awarded this half. Those, not award letters, start the machine clock.
  • Whether the ministry publishes kilometres constructed for the same period alongside these awards.
  • Large packages reaching award on our opportunities desk over the next quarter.

FAQ

How many km of national highways were awarded in April to September 2026?

2,236.3 km, up 62.9 per cent on the same period of 2025-26, according to MoSPI’s quarterly dashboard update of 16 October 2026.

Does this mean 2,236 km of road was built?

No. The figure counts projects awarded to contractors. Construction starts later, once each project gets its appointed date.

Did MoSPI give a value for the awarded projects?

No. The update gives length and growth only, with no rupee value and no split by agency or contract mode.
