Haryana has given administrative approval of Rs 555.83 crore to widen the road from Bilaspur in Gurugram district to Kulana in Jhajjar district from two lanes to four. The same approval covers a flyover through Pataudi town and four-laning the railway overbridge at Heli Mandi. For contractors in south Haryana, that means one more road package with real structures in it, though tendering is still some way off.
The work at a glance
- Value: Rs 555.83 crore, the revised estimate fixed after the state reviewed the detailed project report.
- Road: about 26 km, Bilaspur (Gurugram) to Kulana (Jhajjar), two lanes to four, built to national-highway standard.
- Structures: a flyover in Pataudi town and the existing two-lane overbridge at level crossing 45-A, Heli Mandi, rebuilt to four lanes.
- Stage: DPR done and cost approved. Land still has to be acquired, and no contractor has been named.
What Haryana approved
Public Works Minister Ranbir Gangwa announced the approval, and Dainik Jagran first reported it on 30 October. Haryana E Khabar and Khabar Fast each carried the minister’s figures separately. This is the second phase of a longer Hodal-Bilaspur-Pataudi-Kulana corridor. According to News18 Hindi, the state had already cleared the first phase, about 71 km from Hodal to Bilaspur. Some headlines have joined the 71 km to the Rs 555 crore figure. They belong to different phases.
Which machines this work needs
Start with the rate. Rs 555.83 crore over about 26 km works out to roughly Rs 21 crore a km. That is far above the Rs 2 crore a km of Kerala’s CRIF road upgrades and far below the Rs 124 crore a km of the Sohna Chowk elevated corridor in the same district. The middle rate fits what’s in the scope: mostly at-grade widening, plus two concrete structures that take a large share of the money. Neither report says whether the figure includes land compensation. If it does, contractors will see less than the headline.
The widening itself is a standard road-construction fleet: excavators and tippers to cut and fill the new carriageway beside the old one, motor graders for the layers, and soil and tandem compactors behind them. All of it runs next to live traffic, so expect short shuttles and staged lengths rather than long open runs.
The Pataudi flyover is the piling, batching and girder job. Heli Mandi is harder. Widening an overbridge at a working level crossing means girder lifts in railway-approved blocks, which is where heavy mobile cranes come in, usually hired for the lift rather than bought.
A contractor bidding here is probably better off hiring the crane and owning the earthmoving kit. The widening runs for months. The lifts take days.
What follows next
- Land acquisition along the road and around the Heli Mandi overbridge.
- A PWD tender notice, and whether the road and the two structures go out as one package or several.
- Gurugram and Jhajjar are in the NCR, so winter construction curbs can cut into the first dry season.
FAQ
Is the Rs 555 crore for a 71 km road?
No. The 71 km is the first phase, Hodal to Bilaspur. The Rs 555.83 crore covers the second phase: about 26 km from Bilaspur to Kulana, plus the Pataudi flyover and the Heli Mandi overbridge.
Who will build it?
No one yet. The project has a DPR and an approved cost. Land acquisition and a tender come next.
Which machines will the job need most?
Excavators, tippers, graders and rollers for the widening. Piling rigs, batching plants and cranes for the flyover and the overbridge.
