Construction Equipment Sales August 2026: JCB’s Share Slips

Wheeled construction equipment was the fastest-growing vehicle category in India last month, and the machine that has owned the segment for a generation lost ground while it happened. FADA’s August 2026 retail print puts wheeled CE at 5,166 units, up 31.45% year on year. JCB India sold more machines than a year ago and still gave up nearly four points of market share.

The quick facts

  • Wheeled CE retail hit 5,166 units in August 2026, against 3,930 in August 2025 (+31.45%) and 5,501 in July 2026 (-6.09%).
  • It outgrew every other FADA category, ahead of two-wheelers at +19.69% and passenger vehicles at +16.14%.
  • JCB India registered 2,605 units for a 50.43% share, against 2,126 units and 54.10% a year earlier.
  • LiuGong India went from 7 units to 62, Indo Farm from 19 to 73, and CASE New Holland from 54 to 106.

What FADA reported

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations publishes monthly retail registrations pulled from VAHAN. The August figures were collated on 4 September from 1,467 of the country’s 1,469 RTOs, so this is registration data, not OEM dispatch data. FADA president Sai Giridhar credited infrastructure momentum for the construction equipment number, and added a caution that applies to the whole print: much of the year-on-year strength sits on a soft August 2025 base, when buyers held off waiting for the GST 2.0 rate cut.

What does the share shift mean for buyers?

Run the arithmetic and the headline growth splits in two. JCB’s volume rose about 22.5%. Everybody else, taken together, rose about 42%. That gap is the actual news here. A backhoe loader buyer who took one quote in 2025 because there was only one serious dealer in the district now has a plausible second and third bidder, and the pricing conversation changes with them.

The challengers are still small, and the multiples flatter them. LiuGong going from 7 units to 62 is a nine-fold jump off a base so thin it means little on its own. But Bull Machines nearly doubled, CASE New Holland nearly doubled, and Escorts Kubota added two-thirds to its CE volume. Those are real dealer appointments and real stock on real yards. ACE held roughly its share of a much bigger market, which is the harder trick.

Read the table for what it actually counts. These are RTO registrations, which is why backhoe loaders, wheeled loaders, cranes and concrete equipment makers such as Ajax and Schwing Stetter fill it out, and why a crawler excavator never appears. Judging total equipment demand off this number alone will mislead you.

Our take: the 6.09% drop from July is the monsoon lull doing what it does every year, not a turn in the cycle, and we would not read it as either. The number we would watch is diesel. Every wheeled CE unit registered in August ran on diesel, against 99.47% a year ago. Whatever the electrification talk at the OEM level, nothing has reached the registration data, and a buyer sizing a five-year ownership plan should budget for diesel.

What to watch

  • The September print, due around the second week of October, is the first clean festive-season read without a GST-deferred base distorting it.
  • Whether JCB defends the 50% line, or whether the slide continues into a genuinely contested market.
  • Whether the LiuGong and Indo Farm gains survive once their comparison bases stop being tiny.

FAQ

How many construction equipment units were sold in India in August 2026?

FADA recorded 5,166 wheeled construction equipment retail registrations in August 2026, up 31.45% from 3,930 units in August 2025 and down 6.09% from 5,501 units in July 2026.

Who leads the Indian construction equipment market?

JCB India led with 2,605 units and a 50.43% share in August 2026. ACE followed at 556 units (10.76%) and Escorts Kubota at 412 units (7.98%).

Does FADA data cover excavators?

Not crawler excavators. FADA reports RTO registrations, so the wheeled construction equipment category captures road-registered machines such as backhoe loaders, wheeled loaders, cranes and concrete mixers, not tracked machines.
