KPI Green Energy Solar EPC Order: Rs 2,025 Crore in Bikaner

A 500 MW solar block in the Bikaner desert has just turned into a contract, and the part worth reading is not the panel count. It is the twelve-month clock attached to it, and what that does to demand for earthmoving plant in one corner of west Rajasthan.

What KPI Green Energy disclosed

The Surat-based developer told the exchanges on 29 September that it had won the EPC mandate from NACOF Oorja, a subsidiary of the national farmers’ cooperative federation NACOF. Free Press Journal carried the filing detail the same afternoon, and the trade title Power Technology put the value at about $211 million. Both desks give the same capacity, the same village and the same scope list, and the company’s own framing is that the order adds volume to its EPC book and improves revenue visibility for next year. All of those are company-stated.

How much of Rs 2,025 crore actually buys machines?

Divide it and you get roughly Rs 4.05 crore per MW, or Rs 3.68 crore per MWp. Treat that as a procurement number rather than a construction budget. On a turnkey solar package the modules, inverters, transformers and switchgear take most of the money, and those are bought, not built. No civil-versus-supply split has been published, so we are not going to invent one. What we can say is that the site slice is a minority of the headline, which is the same shape we flagged on cross-country pipeline awards.

The work that does pull iron is real enough. A block this size needs clearing and levelling across a large desert footprint, internal haul and service roads, trenching for DC and HT cabling, pile driving for the module mounting structures, and lifts at the inverter stations and the evacuation bay. In practice that reads as motor graders and soil compactors on the formation, backhoe loaders on trenches and the 33 kV tower pits, tippers on short internal hauls, and a rough-terrain crane for transformer and inverter placement. The specialist item is the pile driver, which solar contractors usually own rather than hire.

What it means for buyers

The calendar is the unusual bit. Most sanctions we cover lose three or four months a year to monsoon earthwork shutdowns. Bikaner does not have that problem; rainfall in that belt is thin, so heat rather than rain sets the working pattern, and a 12-month turnkey clock means the grading and piling get front-loaded into the opening months rather than spread across the term.

Our take: on a single-site job of this length, the earthwork fleet is a hire proposition, not a purchase trigger. Grader and roller hours stop once the formation is signed off and the piling starts, and nobody buys a machine against eight months of work in one tehsil. The forward signal is the park, not the package. This order is one-tenth of a 5,000 MW build at the same location, so the number that matters to Rajasthan hirers is how many more blocks get awarded there and how tightly they overlap.
