The road roller operator salary in India has no official market survey behind it, but the state books are clear about where the job sits. Puducherry’s 2024-25 schedule of rates pays a road roller driver Rs 960 a day, about Rs 24,960 a month at 26 days. The legal floor is lower and set by each state: Rs 588 a day in Himachal Pradesh from 1 April 2025, where the job sits in the highly skilled band. The Border Roads Organisation’s road roller driver post is at Pay Level 2, Rs 19,900 to 63,200 plus allowances. Tandem and vibratory work on asphalt, a clean licence and steady overtime are what lift pay above the floor.
Himachal Pradesh’s minimum wage notification has a surprise in it. The dozer operator and the crane operator sit in the skilled band. The road roller driver sits one band higher, in highly skilled, next to the workshop mechanic and the electrician. Kerala’s roads schedule does the same, listing the road roller driver beside the JCB operator in its top band.
That ranking makes sense once you watch a roller on fresh bitumen. The number of passes, the overlap, the speed and when to switch the vibration off decide whether the layer meets density or gets dug out. The machine is simple. Using it well is not.
Road roller operator salary in India: the official figures
Wage orders set the floor no employer may pay below. State rate books set what a government estimate pays for a day of that worker’s labour. Neither is a promised salary, but they are the only dated, official numbers that name the job.
| Source and date | Job as listed | Rate | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puducherry PSR 2024-25 (from 14 Aug 2024) | Driver (for road roller, concrete mixer, truck etc.) | Rs 960 a day | about Rs 24,960 at 26 days |
| Himachal Pradesh minimum wage (from 1 Apr 2025) | Road Roller Driver, highly skilled | Rs 588 a day | Rs 17,640 as printed (588 x 30) |
| Kerala roads schedule (G.O. 71/2019) | Road Roller Driver, highly skilled | Rs 940 a day basic, plus DA | (basic + DA) x 26, per the order |
| Telangana roads (1 Apr to 30 Sep 2026) | Driver of lorries and road rollers | Rs 5,138 basic + Rs 9,408 VDA | Rs 14,546 |
| Chhattisgarh WRD rate book 2025 (wage order of 25 Sep 2024) | Operator, road roller; operator, vibratory roller (skilled) | Rs 456 a day | Rs 11,858 as printed |
Two cautions. Himachal prints its monthly figure at 30 days, so at 26 working days the same Rs 588 comes to about Rs 15,288. And Telangana’s Rs 14,546 covers the half-year that ended on 30 September 2026; the October figure was not yet on the labour department’s site when we checked. In states whose orders do not name the job, the rate for the same skill grade applies, and the Code on Wages, in force from 21 November 2025, keeps those state notifications running.
The spread is wide. A roller driver on Chhattisgarh’s floor and one on Puducherry’s estimating rate can be Rs 13,000 a month apart for the same work. Compare like with like: a wage order is a legal minimum, a rate book is what the state thinks the job costs.
The government job: BRO’s Driver Road Roller post
The Border Roads Organisation’s Advertisement 01/2024 is the clearest current recruitment for the job. It placed “Driver Road Roller (OG)” at Pay Level 2, Rs 19,900 to 63,200, the same level as its mechanical transport drivers and excavating machinery operators. Allowances are paid on top under central government rules.
The entry bar was Class 10 plus either a heavy motor vehicle or road roller driving licence with six months of roller driving, or a defence plant-driver course. The trade test asked candidates to drive the roller forward and back with only 10 cm of clearance on each side. Only two backlog posts were on offer, and the practical test ran in September 2025, so treat this as proof the post exists rather than as an open door.
What a roller’s hire rate says about the operator
Owners often ask how much of a hire rate the operator takes. The rate books include the operator but never show the operator’s share:
| Rate book | Roller | Hire rate | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chhattisgarh PWD road SOR (from 15 Jun 2026) | Smooth wheeled roller, 8 T | Rs 323 an hour | Fuel and manpower, working hours only |
| Chhattisgarh PWD road SOR | Tandem road roller | Rs 799 an hour | Fuel and manpower |
| Chhattisgarh PWD road SOR | Vibratory roller | Rs 1,084 an hour | Fuel and manpower |
| Puducherry PSR 2024-25 | Diesel road roller, 8 to 10 tonne | Rs 3,650 a day | Operating staff, diesel, lubricants, one 8-hour shift |
Set Puducherry’s Rs 3,650 a day against its Rs 960 for the driver and the operator’s wage is about a quarter of the day’s hire, before you count the cleaner the book also prices at Rs 550. That is the owner’s case for paying above the floor. A roller that stands idle because the operator is absent, or that has to re-roll a failed layer, loses far more than the gap between a minimum wage and a fair one.
What lifts a roller operator’s pay above the floor
The floors are the start, not the ceiling. In practice pay rises with:
- The machine. Moving from a static three-wheel roller to a tandem or vibratory roller on bituminous work is the main step up, because density on asphalt is less forgiving than on soil.
- Highway work. Large road contractors run paving in long shifts, and the Code on Wages sets overtime at no less than twice the normal rate.
- A licence and papers. A valid licence in the right class and a skill-council certificate make an operator easier to place. See operator training and certification for the qualifications that exist.
- The next seat. Roller operators who learn the grader or the paver move into better-paid roles; the wider ladder is in our heavy equipment operator salary guide.
For the owner: what to pay, and what to buy
Start at the floor for your state and the operator’s skill band, then add for the machine. An operator who has run an 11-tonne soil compactor such as the JCB VM117 or the L&T 1190 on highway embankments is worth more than one who has only rolled village roads. If you hire out the roller, price the operator into the rate the way the state books do; our road roller rental guide shows how hire terms are set.
Pay the operator on time and in writing. Under the Code on Wages, a missed minimum or unpaid overtime is the employer’s liability, and the person on the roller is the one who decides whether your layer passes the density test.
The bottom line
A road roller operator in India earns somewhere between a state’s skilled floor, as low as Rs 456 a day in Chhattisgarh, and the Rs 960 a day that Puducherry’s rate book pays, with government posts at Pay Level 2. Two states rank the job as highly skilled, and the owner who treats it that way gets better compaction and fewer re-rolls.
