Jharkhand’s cabinet has cleared Rs 607.03 crore for the Nimdih-Kukru mega lift irrigation scheme, which will pump water out of the Chandil reservoir and carry it to farms in two blocks of Saraikela-Kharsawan district through buried pipe. For machine owners in the Kolhan belt, a buried-pipe network is a trenching job, and trenching runs on backhoe loaders and mid-size excavators, not big earthmoving fleets. The same sitting also cleared Rs 114.62 crore for three road jobs in Giridih.
The quick facts
- Sanction: administrative approval of Rs 607.0332 crore for the Nimdih-Kukru mega lift irrigation scheme, given by the Jharkhand cabinet on Tuesday, 27 October 2026.
- Scope: water lifted from the Chandil reservoir on the Subarnarekha and delivered through an underground pipeline to Nimdih and Kukru blocks.
- Same sitting: three Giridih roads totalling Rs 114.62 crore, plus Rs 32.17 crore to revive the Lotia reservoir in Hazaribagh and line its main canals.
- Not yet published: command area, pipeline length, pipe material and the executing contractor.
What did the Jharkhand cabinet approve?
Dainik Jagran’s Chandil correspondent reported the irrigation sanction the same evening, and Johar LIVE and Sharp Bharat printed the cabinet’s itemised list with the same exact figure, Rs 607.0332 crore. Johar LIVE’s list also gives the road works. The Badkitand-Jabardaha-Marjugundi road (7.783 km) gets Rs 40.09 crore and the Madhalo-Khetko-Alakdiha road off NH-19 (7.8 km) gets Rs 37.47 crore, both with bridges, land acquisition and utility shifting. The 42.40 km Pataldih-Deori-Gawan-Satgawan road gets Rs 37.07 crore to improve its riding quality. These three add up exactly to the Rs 114 crore figure other desks carried for Giridih.
What it means for buyers
Start with the pipe. A lift scheme on buried pipe has two jobs inside it. One is the pump house and intake at the reservoir, which is concrete work with a crane to set pumps and heavy fittings. The other is the network, which is trench, lay, backfill and compact, repeated kilometre after kilometre. The trunk main will need 20-tonne class excavators and lifting gear for large-diameter pipe. The distribution lines are backhoe loader work, with plate compactors and small rollers behind them.
Nothing on the published record says how long the network is, so no per-hectare or per-kilometre rate can be worked out yet. Our irrigation and dam equipment guide covers both fleets.
The roads tell two different stories. Madhalo-Alakdiha works out to about Rs 4.8 crore per km and Badkitand-Marjugundi to about Rs 5.15 crore per km. Both include bridges and land, so expect structures work alongside widening. Pataldih-Satgawan comes to under Rs 90 lakh per km, which is a resurfacing rate: a paver, a roller and tippers, with no real earthwork.
Our take: the pipeline is a moving work front, so most owners will hire their trenching kit to it rather than buy for it. That favours local backhoe and excavator owners in Saraikela and Jamshedpur. The window that counts is November to May. Even if tenders move fast, the first full working season is more likely 2027-28 than this winter.
What to watch
- The Water Resources Department tender for the scheme, and whether it is let as one EPC package or split into intake and network lots.
- Published command area and pipeline length, which will show how much trench the job really holds.
- Road Construction Department tenders for the three Giridih roads now moved over from rural works.
