Rs 1,024 a day, or about Rs 26,600 a month at 26 days, is the closest official figure to a boom lift operator salary in India: it is the legal floor from 1 October 2026 for skilled construction work on central government jobs in Area A cities. No wage order we checked names the boom lift or man lift operator. Two state documents name a “Lift Operator” in the skilled grade: Kerala at Rs 890 a day basic plus dearness allowance, and Tamil Nadu’s 2025-26 schedule of rates at Rs 870 a day. These are floors, not market rates; a national Level 4 platform qualification, telehandler skills and a step into fleet supervision are what can move pay above them.
A man lift operator’s day is spent 10 or 15 metres up, beside a facade, under a factory roof or along a metro viaduct. The work is skilled and the risk is real, yet nobody in India publishes what the job pays. What does exist is a set of dated legal floors. Here is how to read them.
Does any wage order name the boom lift operator?
No. We checked the central construction schedule, the Himachal Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala construction orders and Tamil Nadu’s schedule of rates. None uses the words boom lift, man lift or aerial platform. Two documents name a “Lift Operator”, and neither defines it. On a building site the term most likely means the operator of a construction hoist, so treat it as the nearest named job, not a man lift rate.
| Document and date | Job as listed | Day rate | At 26 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labour Bureau VDA order, construction, from 1 Oct 2026 | Skilled (no lift job named), Area A | Rs 1,024 | Rs 26,624 |
| Same order, Area B and Area C | Skilled | Rs 933 / Rs 794 | Rs 24,258 / Rs 20,644 |
| Kerala G.O.(P) 71/2019, construction (Aug 2019) | Lift Operator, skilled | Rs 890 basic + DA | Rs 23,140 + DA |
| Tamil Nadu SOR 2025-26 (from 22 Jul 2025) | Lift Operator, skilled | Rs 870 | Rs 22,620 |
| Himachal Pradesh, construction (from 1 Apr 2025) | Crane Operator, skilled (no lift job named) | Rs 493 | Rs 14,790 (printed, 30 days) |
The 26-day figures are our arithmetic. The Tamil Nadu number is an estimating rate that engineers use to price government work, not a wage order. Kerala’s construction wage order adds a dearness allowance of Re 1 a day for every point the district’s price index rises above 300, so the total is above the basic wherever the index has passed 300. The central rate binds only work in the central sphere, such as contracts of central ministries and central public sector companies.
Boom lift operator salary in India per month, by type of site
Which floor applies depends on who you work for and what industry the site belongs to, not on the machine.
- High-rise facade and building work falls under the state’s construction schedule. In Kerala that is the skilled grade; in Himachal Pradesh the skilled rate is Rs 14,790 a month.
- Work for a central ministry or central public sector company, such as some airport and highway contracts, follows the central rate: Rs 26,624 a month at 26 days in an Area A city. On metro work, ask which government’s rate the contract uses.
- Factory and warehouse maintenance falls under the schedule for that industry. If it does not name the job, your skill grade decides the floor.
For context, the market view in heavy equipment operator salary in India puts most machine operators at Rs 15,000 to 40,000 a month (indicative, as of July 2026). Treat that as the market around the job, not a boom lift figure.
What boom lift operator training adds
There is a national qualification. The National Qualifications Register entry for Aerial Work Platform Operator (2022/IS/IESC/05908) lists it at NSQF Level 4, 390 hours. The Infrastructure Equipment Skill Council awards it. The mandatory part covers pre-use checks (60 hours), platform operation (120 hours), maintenance and fault-finding (60 hours) and site safety (30 hours). A 10th-pass candidate with a CITS training qualification, or an 11th-pass candidate, needs no experience; 8th or 10th pass alone needs four years.
One caution: the register shows the qualification valid till 26 May 2025. Ask the training centre which version it certifies today. We found no provider in India publishing a dated course fee, so get the fee in writing.
What does the certificate add? No order pays a certified operator more by law. Its value is with employers: rental companies match operators to machine groups, and the scissor or boom choice changes what they must know (see scissor lift vs boom lift). The safety checklist itself sits in the aerial work platform guide. On the law, the OSH Code 2020, in force since 21 November 2025, lets the government set standards for competent persons on hoists and other lifting appliances.
The qualification also carries an optional 60-hour module, “Operate and maintain telescopic handler”. That is a useful second skill: a telehandler with a certified work platform does some of the same access work and also lifts material. Operators who can run both, for example an ACE AT 30 or a JCB 530-70, stay busy when the platform is idle.
Rental company or site contractor: who pays you?
When a boom lift comes on hire with its operator, the rental company is your employer, and your salary is built into its hire rate. A Cochin Shipyard tender of July 2025 for forklifts hired with an operator shows the usual terms: the monthly rate includes the operator’s salary and statutory payments, the shift runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an hour for lunch, the client pays overtime at the monthly rate divided by 26 x 9 hours, and the operator’s food and stay are the vendor’s job.
A site contractor who owns or long-hires the machine pays you directly for one project. Neither side has published pay, and the legal floor is the same for both in the same state and grade. The real differences are steadiness and overtime. A rental operator moves from site to site and may have idle days between jobs; a contractor job ends with the project. Pay above the floor depends on the employer and the city.
One line on the Gulf: certified operators abroad earn an indicative Rs 60,000 to 1,50,000 a month equivalent (as of July 2026). Read operator jobs abroad before paying any agent.
From operator to rental fleet supervisor
The next step up has its own national qualification: Supervisor (Plant & Machinery), NSQF Level 5, 480 hours, whose job on the register is to manage fleet machines. Entry needs a Level 4 qualification plus two years, or 12th pass plus four years. Its validity date on the register is also 26 May 2025.
On central construction work, supervisory jobs such as overseer and assistant foreman sit in the highly skilled grade at Rs 1,111 a day in Area A from 1 October 2026, about Rs 28,900 a month at 26 days. In Kerala, the building crane operator is the named highly skilled job at Rs 940 a day basic. Crane work is another way up, and its floors are in tower crane operator salary in India.
The question to ask before you sign
Before you take a man lift job, ask the employer or rental company this: “Which wage schedule and skill grade are you paying me under, and how is my overtime worked out when the machine runs past nine hours or sits idle between sites?” If the answer names no grade, you cannot check it against the floor. If you run a fleet and want operators who can handle both platforms and material lifting, compare telehandler models and prices.
Wage rates, schedules of rates, qualifications and labour law change — confirm the current minimum wage with your state labour department and the actual pay, overtime and benefits with your employer or rental company before you accept or offer a job.
