A rigger course in India takes 360 hours at the Basic Rigger level (NSQF level 3), 450 hours for Advance Rigger and 540 hours for a Lifting & Rigging Supervisor (Safety), going by the National Qualification Register on 6 Nov 2026. The longest route is the two-year DGT apprenticeship trade of Rigger. Private fees are not published; the one government fee we found is Rs 5,000 for a three-day lifting gear course at the Central Labour Institute, Mumbai (Dec 2025). On pay, Telangana’s wage schedule for project construction names the Mechanic Rigger as skilled at Rs 14,659 a month (1 Apr to 30 Sep 2026), and Himachal Pradesh pays a khalasi Rs 425 to Rs 493 a day depending on experience.
On a crane lift everyone watches the operator, yet the rigger on the ground makes most of the decisions that keep the lift safe. The rigger picks the sling, hooks the load, checks its weight and gives the signals the operator follows. A rigger course trains that ground job, and in India it comes in three levels on the national register plus a two-year apprenticeship trade.
Here is what each course is, who stands behind the certificate, what is known about fees and duration, and what the wage orders pay once you have it.
What a rigger does on a crane lift
The Directorate General of Training’s curriculum for the Rigger trade describes the job plainly. A rigger selects ropes, pulleys, blocks and slings to suit the weight and size of the load, attaches the load to the crane hook, and gives directions to the crane operator by hand signals, loudspeaker or telephone. On a building site that covers three tasks.
- Slinging: choosing the sling, the hitch and the lifting points. Belt colours, sling types and when to throw a sling away are set out in the guide to lifting slings.
- Load checks: knowing the weight, the radius and whether the crane can take it at that radius, which is what a crane load chart tells you.
- Signalling: one person, agreed before the lift, giving signals the operator can see and understand.
On a pick-and-carry crane such as the 15-tonne Escorts Hydra 15 or the 14-tonne ACE 14XW, the operator often cannot see the hook once the load is close to a column or a trench. At that point the rigger’s signal is often all the operator has to go on.
Rigger course types in India and who certifies them
India has no single rigger licence. What exists is a set of qualifications on the National Qualification Register run by NCVET, each owned by an awarding body, plus the DGT apprenticeship trade. We went through all 2,814 titles on the register on 6 November 2026 and these are the ones built for rigging work:
| Course (awarding body) | NSQF level | Total hours | Split | Valid till |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khalasi (Assistant Rigger) (Construction Skill Development Council of India) | 3 | 360 | 90 theory, 180 practical, 30 employability, 60 on the job | 31 Aug 2026 |
| Basic Rigger (Safety Skill Development Foundation) | 3 | 360 | 132 theory, 108 practical, 30 employability, 90 on the job | 22 Oct 2027 |
| Assistant Rigger – Heavy Material (Indian Iron and Steel Sector Skill Council) | 3 | 420 | 120 theory, 210 practical, 30 employability, 60 on the job | 31 Mar 2028 |
| Advance Rigger (Safety Skill Development Foundation) | 4 | 450 | 195 theory, 105 practical, 60 employability, 90 on the job | 22 Oct 2027 |
| Lifting & Rigging Supervisor (Safety) (Safety Skill Development Foundation) | 4.5 | 540 | 240 theory, 150 practical, 60 employability, 90 on the job | 22 Oct 2027 |
| Junior Tower Crane Operator / Signalman (Infrastructure Equipment Skill Council) | 3 | 270 | 60 theory, 120 practical, 90 on the job | 26 May 2025 |
| Rigger trade, apprenticeship (DGT, NCVT exam) | 5 | 4,120 | 1,000 basic training, 3,120 on the job, over 2 years | Curriculum revised 2018 |
Two lines in that table need care. The register shows the Khalasi course valid only to 31 August 2026 and the junior signalman course to 26 May 2025, so a certificate issued under either code after those dates may not be recognised. Before you pay, ask the institute for the qualification code and look it up yourself.
Basic, advance and supervisor levels
The Basic Rigger course takes a 10th pass with no experience, or an 8th pass with three years of work. Its modules cover slings, below-the-hook lifters, manual hoists, rigging techniques and load stability. Advance Rigger asks for 12th pass or a diploma, or the level 3 certificate plus three years, and adds rigging mathematics, load calculations and working load limits. The register’s description of an advance rigger includes setting up and dismantling cranes and hoists.
The lifting supervisor course in India is the third rung. The register describes the job as running the lift to a written lifting plan and briefing the crane operators, riggers and signal operators before it starts. Entry needs 12th pass or a diploma with 18 months of experience. Above it sits Crane Inspector (Safety), a 600-hour level 5.5 course from the same awarding body.
Rigger signalman course and crane rigger course names
Course names such as rigger signalman or crane rigger do not appear as titles on the national register. If a certificate carries no register code, it is the institute’s own certificate, and its value depends on whether your employer or client accepts that institute. Crane operator courses are a separate track, covered in the guide to operator training in India.
Rigger course duration and fees
Duration follows the hours. At eight hours a day, 360 hours is about 45 training days, 450 hours about 56 and 540 hours about 68, and each includes 90 hours of on-the-job training. A course sold as two or three days long is the institute’s own design, not a register qualification.
The apprenticeship route is different in kind. The Rigger trade under the Apprenticeship Training Scheme takes an 8th pass, runs two years, and puts 18 months of it on the job inside the employer’s works, with basic training at a tied-up ITI. It ends in an NCVT exam and the National Apprenticeship Certificate. The DGT curriculum lists it under the marine sector, and the industry experts who revised it came from Tata Steel and Mazagaon Dock, so expect apprenticeship seats in shipyards and heavy industry more than on building sites.
On fees, none of the awarding bodies above publishes one. The one government figure we found is the Central Labour Institute in Mumbai, under the Ministry of Labour and Employment: Rs 5,000 per participant for a three-day course on safe use of lifting appliances and lifting gear, held 3 to 5 December 2025. It was aimed at safety managers, officers and engineers, paid through Bharatkosh, with no refreshments and no accommodation included.
Before you sign up with a private institute, ask for the price of each cost head in writing:
- Tuition for the theory and practical hours.
- Assessment and certificate fee, and whose name is on the certificate.
- Travel, food and a room if the centre is away from home.
- Wages lost for the days you are not on site.
- A medical fitness check, which a site will ask for anyway.
What site clients ask a rigger to show
For years the clearest rule was rule 81 of the Building and Other Construction Workers Central Rules, 1998. It said no one could be employed to operate a lifting appliance, or to give signals to its operator, unless that person was above 18, “sufficiently competent and reliable”, knew the risks of lifting, and was medically examined at set intervals.
That has changed. The OSH Code, 2020 came into force on 21 November 2025, and its Central Rules of 8 May 2026 (G.S.R. 345(E)) replaced the 1998 rules for central-sphere work. We found no rigger or signaller clause in the 2026 rules. The Code itself lists the “appointment of competent persons on hoists or other lifting appliances” among the matters the Central Government can set standards for. States frame their own rules.
On the ground, the 1998 wording is still a sound checklist. Carry proof of age, a certificate with a register code, a recent medical fitness record and a letter showing your lifting experience. A client’s safety officer can check each one in minutes.
Rigger salary in India: what the wage orders pay
Few wage orders name the rigger. These are the ones we could verify:
| Order and period | Job as listed | Band | Minimum wage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telangana, construction of projects incl. dams (G.O.Ms. 107), 1 Apr to 30 Sep 2026 | Mechanic Rigger | Skilled | Rs 14,659 a month (basic Rs 4,770 + VDA Rs 9,889) |
| Himachal Pradesh, construction, from 1 Apr 2025 | Khalasi (0 to 3 years) | Unskilled | Rs 425 a day, Rs 12,750 a month |
| Himachal Pradesh, construction, from 1 Apr 2025 | Khalasi (3 to 8 years) | Semi-skilled | Rs 452 a day, Rs 13,560 a month |
| Himachal Pradesh, construction, from 1 Apr 2025 | Khalasi (8 years and above) | Skilled | Rs 493 a day, Rs 14,790 a month |
| Centre, construction, A-class cities, from 1 Oct 2026 | No jobs named | Semi-skilled / skilled | Rs 933 / Rs 1,024 a day |
Read the notes before quoting these. Telangana’s labour department had posted no table after 30 September 2026 when we checked on 6 November, so the April figure is the latest published. Himachal prints the month at 30 days; at 26 working days the skilled khalasi rate is about Rs 12,800. Himachal’s list uses the job title khalasi, which the construction skill council pairs with assistant rigger, and it moves the worker up a band with years of service. The central rates, from the Labour Bureau’s order of 30 September 2026, apply where the Central Government is the appropriate government, such as a railway or central public sector project; the skilled rate comes to about Rs 26,600 a month at 26 days.
The certificate matters most where the band is decided. A rigger who can show a level 4 certificate and the experience letters has a case for the skilled band rather than semi-skilled. The crane operator floors in the same orders are set out in tower crane operator salary. Contractors pricing a lift crew can compare crane models and prices alongside the crew cost.
Singapore runs its own course for the job, Perform Rigger and Signalman Tasks, and Gulf employers set their own rules, so check what the overseas employer accepts before paying for a course here.
When a rigger course is worth paying for
For a worker already slinging loads, the course pays when it moves you up a band or opens a site that would not let you near the hook without paper. A register-coded Basic Rigger certificate is the cheapest way to show “competent” in writing; Advance Rigger and the supervisor course pay when you are ready to plan lifts, not just rig them. A certificate with no register code, or one under a lapsed code, is worth much less than the institute will say.
For a crane owner or contractor, paying for one rigger’s course is small against one dropped load, a damaged boom or a stopped site. Send the person who already signals for your operator, ask for the register code in advance, and keep a copy of the certificate with the crane’s papers. Then find the next lifting job among live government tenders and opportunities.
Course rules, fees, wage rates and labour law change — confirm current terms with the awarding body, the training institute, your state labour department and your employer before deciding.
