The MEP engineer salary in India, going by public notices from 2025 and 2026, starts at a basic of Rs 27,270 a month for a diploma junior engineer in electrical or mechanical (NBCC) and Rs 36,000 fixed for an electrical graduate with one year (IRCON). With two years of MEP work, Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation pays an E-1 basic of Rs 40,000 plus allowances. Seven years earns Rs 85,000 a month consolidated at Chennai Metro, and 13 years earns Rs 1,25,000. Private builders and MEP contractors do not publish pay, but Mumbai Metro’s notices set minimum private-sector CTCs of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 7 lakh and Rs 18 lakh a year for applicants to its MEP posts.
Rs 7 lakh a year. That is the lowest current annual CTC Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation would accept from a private-sector applicant for its Assistant Engineer (MEP) post in May 2025. It is one of the few places where a public body has put a number on what MEP engineers earn outside government.
Job portals will give you a figure in seconds, but those figures are self-reported and undated. This piece uses only notices that a metro, a PSU or a central institute signed and dated. MEP here means the building-services trades, which Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation’s own notice spells out as “Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing”: HVAC and ventilation, power distribution, fire systems, water supply and drainage. The figures cover India only. Gulf pay in Dubai, Saudi Arabia and the UAE is a separate market with its own contracts and is not covered here.

| CMRL, Deputy General Manager (Electrical & Mechanical) | CMRL/HR/CON/02/2026, 11 Feb 2026 | 13 years | Rs 1,25,000 a month, consolidated |
Two kinds of figure sit in this table, and they are not comparable at a glance. A consolidated or fixed figure is the monthly amount itself. A scale (S-3, W6, E-1, E-5, Level 8) is basic pay, with dearness allowance, house rent and other allowances added on top, so the same Rs 40,000 on paper becomes a much larger gross.
The Chennai figure has held steady. Chennai Metro offered the same Rs 85,000 in January 2025 for a Manager (VAC & TVS) whose seven years had to include tunnel ventilation, air conditioning or “Mechanical Electrical Plumbing (MEP)” work on a large infrastructure project.
What the private-sector salary floors tell you
Private MEP contractors, developers and consultants do not publish pay. The closest official evidence is the minimum current CTC that metros demand from private applicants.
| MMRCL post | Private-sector experience asked | Minimum current CTC | Per month (our division) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Engineer-II (MEP), 2025 | 6 years (degree) or 9 years (diploma) | Rs 5 lakh a year | about Rs 41,700 |
| Assistant Engineer (MEP), 2025 | 8 years (degree) or 11 years (diploma) | Rs 7 lakh a year | about Rs 58,300 |
| DGM (MEP/Building Services & Coordination), 2026 | 14 years in executive grade | Rs 18 lakh a year | Rs 1,50,000 |
Read these as floors, not averages: the least a candidate must already earn to be considered. CTC includes the employer’s provident fund and other costs, so take-home is lower. Treat them as indicative of the private market, nothing more. Chennai Metro takes a different route. Its October 2026 notice asks a private applicant for Manager (Electrical & Mechanical) for seven years, at least four of them in middle management “equivalent to DM in PSU”, at a company with a project of at least Rs 200 crore or an annual turnover of at least Rs 50 crore in the last three years.
Basic pay is not take-home
IRCON’s regular Assistant Manager/Electrical notice (Advt 13/2025, 17 May 2025) uses the same E-1 scale of Rs 40,000 to 1,40,000 and spells out what sits on top: variable DA, then 48.7% of basic; HRA of 27%, 18% or 9% for X, Y and Z class cities; allowances at 35%; and performance-related pay. Applied to the Rs 40,000 starting basic, those rates add up to roughly Rs 84,300 a month in an X-class city and Rs 77,100 in a Z-class city, before PF, tax and performance pay. That is our arithmetic on IRCON’s May 2025 rates, and DA moves, so treat it as a shape, not a quote. IIT Hyderabad shows the same shape in its own words: a Level 8 basic of Rs 47,600 with an initial gross of approximately Rs 95,000.
The MRVC Project Engineer (MEP) notice lists DA, cafeteria allowances, HRA, a consolidated travelling allowance and the employer’s PF share, deducts PF and income tax from gross, and redesignates the engineer as Senior Project Engineer after one satisfactory year. Consolidated posts work differently. Chennai Metro’s Rs 85,000 comes with medical and personal accident insurance, life insurance and a mobile phone reimbursement, and contract staff may be considered for an IDA scale after two satisfactory years. IRCON’s Rs 36,000 contract post carries no allowances over the fixed pay, only a 5% increment for each completed year.
Read the bond clause before you sign. MRVC asks for a surety bond of Rs 1 lakh to serve two years, and IRCON’s regular E-1 post a bond of Rs 3 lakh for three years. How the PF deduction works on a construction payroll is set out in PF and ESI for construction workers.
If you run a contracting firm, these figures are also your staff cost when you price an electrical, HVAC or plumbing package. Public bodies tender such packages too, and you can scan current government construction tenders to see which packages carry an MEP engineer on site.
What moves an MEP engineer’s pay
Execution, design or maintenance
The notices describe the senior seat as much commercial as technical. Chennai Metro’s Manager (VAC & TVS) list runs from review of design documents and factory acceptance testing to “Variation statements” and “Verification and Payment certification of works”. Mumbai Metro’s DGM post asks for tendering, international competitive bidding, “BOQ preparation and estimation” and design coordination with consultants and contractors. IIT Hyderabad lists single-line diagrams, billing and estimate preparation as desirable. The engineer who can measure, bill and argue a variation climbs past the one who can only install and commission. The pricing side of that skill is covered in estimation engineer salary in India.
The trade you come up through
Large employers hire by trade. HITES, the infrastructure arm of the government-owned HLL Lifecare, opened fixed-term hiring in September 2026 for separate Senior Operations Manager posts in MEP, HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing, though its poster gives no pay. IIT Bhubaneswar’s HVAC post wants a mechanical degree, six years of HVAC work and, preferably, experience running a central AC or chiller plant. On the plumbing side, public notices often file the work under civil. NBCC’s Assistant Manager (PHE), on the E-1 scale, asks for a civil degree plus a master’s in public health or environmental engineering.
Who you worked for, and on what
The size of your past employer decides whether you can apply at all. Chennai Metro’s Rs 200 crore project test is one filter. MRVC counts MEP experience only from a government body, a PSU or a public limited company, and accepts a listed company’s certificate only if its average turnover was at least Rs 500 crore over three years. Mumbai Metro’s MEP posts list township and multi-storey building work, and high-rise projects integrated with underground metro stations, as desirable. Years with a small building-services subcontractor may not count for these posts.
Degree or diploma
A diploma holder reaches the same posts, three years later. On the government-service route, Mumbai Metro asks a degree holder for five years for Junior Engineer-II (MEP) and seven for Assistant Engineer (MEP); a diploma holder needs eight and ten. NBCC hires diploma holders straight in at the S-3 junior engineer level with no experience.
Software and systems, not certificates
None of these notices asks for a paid private certification. They name tools: AutoCAD and Revit MEP (MRVC and Mumbai Metro), MS Project and Primavera (Mumbai Metro), BIM models and SCADA or BMS systems (Chennai Metro), along with NFPA and statutory fire and electrical clearances. The Chennai Metro notice of October 2026 lists LT and HT distribution, earthing, VAC, fire systems, water supply, pumping and effluent treatment plants in a single experience line, a fair map of the full MEP job.
City
Public scales are national; the city enters through HRA. Under IRCON’s pattern the gap between an X-class and a Z-class posting is 18% of basic, or Rs 7,200 a month at the E-1 start. IRCON’s fixed Rs 36,000 contract pay carries no allowances at all, so on that kind of post the city changes nothing on the pay slip.
The statutory floor
Delhi’s minimum wage order effective 1 April 2025 fixes Rs 24,356 a month (Rs 937 a day) for clerical and supervisory staff who are graduates and above, in all scheduled employments. It was still the latest order on the Delhi Labour Department’s minimum wage page on 22 October 2026. Every entry figure in the table clears it; other states notify their own rates.
MEP versus civil at the same grade
Public pay does not reward the discipline itself. Mumbai Metro’s May 2025 notice put Junior Engineer-II (MEP) and Junior Engineer-II (Civil) on the same W6 scale, and IRCON’s February 2026 notice paid its electrical and civil works engineers the same Rs 36,000. What differs is the route up. Civil site engineers usually climb through billing and planning, as set out in site engineer salary in India, and both routes end in the grades covered in construction project manager salary.
The bottom line
The official record puts MEP pay at about Rs 27,000 to 40,000 a month in basic or fixed pay over the first two years, an E-1 basic of Rs 40,000 upward with allowances on top at a metro or PSU, Rs 85,000 a month consolidated at six to seven years, and Rs 1,25,000 at 13 years. For private pay, Mumbai Metro’s CTC floors of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 7 lakh and Rs 18 lakh are the best public markers. Compare offers on take-home and bond terms, not basic, and build the billing skills the senior notices ask for.
