As of October 2026, six wire rope manufacturers in India state on their own websites that they make crane rope at an Indian plant: Bedmutha Industries, Bharat Wire Ropes, Mahadev Industries, Roraj Industries, Shree Steel Wire Ropes and Usha Martin. Four are in Maharashtra, one is at Ghaziabad and the oldest is at Ranchi. Whoever you buy from, a replacement hoist rope should come with the ISI mark on a metal reel tag, a BIS licence number you can check, and a test certificate that names your reel.

Thirteen millimetres. That is the hoist rope size stated by every pick-and-carry crane on DesiMachines that publishes one, 38 machines out of 68. So when your hydra’s rope is due, size is the easy part. The hard part is the reel: who made it, to which standard, and whether its paperwork belongs to it.

Below are the Indian makers that say they produce crane rope, then what to ask for when you buy, using the BIS documents behind the ISI mark. How to read a rope specification is covered in the crane wire rope specification guide.

How this list of wire rope manufacturers in India was built

On 22 October 2026 we opened the websites of the wire rope makers that come up when Indian buyers look for crane and hoist rope. A company is listed only if its own site, or its own annual report, names a plant in India and lists rope for cranes. Companies whose sites named only an office, or did not say where their ropes are made, are left out, as are foreign brands that make their rope abroad.

The list is alphabetical, not a ranking, and it is not complete. For scale, the BIS standards portal showed 16 licences against IS 2266 : 2024, the general engineering rope standard, when we checked on the same day.

As stated on each maker’s site on 22 October 2026. A listed construction is not a promise that every size is in stock.

What each maker says it makes

Bedmutha Industries

Bedmutha Industries was founded in 1988 and sells its ropes under the SURE brand, up to 64 mm, from wire it draws in-house. Its crane page names SURE 6X36, SURE 6X19FLR and SURE 18 x 7 FC among its hoist ropes and says the range includes rotation-resistant ropes. Its address is at STICE, Sinnar, Nashik, and its certificates page lists IS 2266 and Lloyd’s Register.

Bharat Wire Ropes

Bharat Wire Ropes was incorporated in 1986 and runs plants at Atgaon on the Mumbai-Nashik highway and at Chalisgaon MIDC, where commercial production began in 2017. Its site puts installed capacity at 1,08,000 tonnes a year after a 2025 expansion. Its crane ropes are sold as INDIROPE. The company says they are certified by ABS, DNV and Lloyd’s, says its mining ropes are certified by the Directorate General of Mines Safety, and shows a Dock Safety Inspectorate approval.

Mahadev Industries

Mahadev Industries started in 1995 in Delhi and moved to the UPSIDC Tronica City estate at Loni, Ghaziabad in 2002. It describes itself as an MSME unit making ropes up to 30 tonnes in a single length, with a 300-tonne breaking force testing machine. Its approvals page lists IS 2266 : 2024, and its home page prints BIS licence numbers next to its product lines, a detail a buyer can check.

Roraj Industries

Roraj Industries has its factory at Boisar and an office in Kandivali, Mumbai. Its crane rope page describes a 6×36 Warrington-Seale rope with a steel core for mobile, tower and dockside cranes. It gives no size range for crane rope, so ask for one in writing.

Shree Steel Wire Ropes

Shree Steel Wire Ropes was established in 1972 and makes rope at Khopoli, near Mumbai; its 2025-26 annual report describes the business as wire rope, rope products and railway overhead equipment items. Its product table lists 6×36-family ropes from 9 mm to 44 mm for crane and hoist work, and 17×7 and 18×7 from 8 mm to 26 mm for cranes.

Usha Martin

Usha Martin set up its Ranchi plant in 1961 on more than 100 acres; it makes ropes from 1.5 mm to 155 mm in grades from 1370 to 2160 N/mm2. A second unit at Hoshiarpur, Punjab, dates from 1974. Its crane rope page lists pickup and truck-mounted cranes among the uses. It also offers socketing and periodic rope inspection including NDT.

If you are still choosing the crane itself, rope size and falls are listed against each model in the pick-and-carry crane range. The Escorts HYDRA 14 states six falls on a 12-tonne winch, and the ACE 14XW states four falls of 13 mm rope.

Is the ISI mark compulsory on steel wire rope?

BIS announced on 20 November 2024 that certification of steel wire ropes for general engineering purposes became mandatory from 1 December 2024, under IS 2266. The notice says manufacturers and suppliers must hold the certification before selling. The BIS portal now shows IS 2266 : 2019 as withdrawn and replaced by IS 2266 : 2024, the sixth revision.

A DPIIT office memorandum dated 4 November 2025 then transferred thirteen steel product quality control orders, including the one on steel wire, strands, wire ropes and wire mesh, to the Ministry of Steel. The DPIIT orders stand withdrawn only from the date the Ministry of Steel notifies corresponding orders. Confirm the position when you buy; either way an ISI-marked rope gives you something to check, and an unmarked one does not.

Some makers’ pages still quote IS 2266 : 2002 or 2019. The BIS certificate format states conformity to IS 2266 : 2024, so check which edition your certificate names.

What should come with a replacement crane rope?

The BIS product manual for IS 2266 : 2024, dated January 2025, sets out what a licensed maker must supply. That is your checklist.

What to look for Where it should be What it tells you
ISI Standard Mark A metal tag attached to each reel or drum The maker claims the reel conforms to IS 2266
Licence number, written CM/L followed by digits On the product or package, with a line pointing to the BIS website Which BIS licence the claim rests on
Certificate of conformance With each consignment Reel number, quantity, type, construction, coating, lay, grade, core, size, length and breaking load for each reel
Licence scope In the licence; the BIS Care app shows licence details The sizes, constructions, cores and grades the licence covers

Three checks take about ten minutes. First, match the reel number on the certificate to the tag on the reel you received. Second, enter the licence number in the BIS Care app, whose Verify Licence Details feature fetches the licensee’s details from the CM/L number. Third, compare the licence scope with your rope. The product manual says a maker declares the varieties it wants covered and that BIS may restrict the scope to what the maker can make and test, so a licence for 6×19 does not by itself cover a 6×36 rope.

Read the breaking load correctly. The manual’s recommended plan is one minimum breaking force test per control unit, meaning rope of the same diameter, type and grade made from the same strands and core. The figure covers your reel’s batch, not a pull test on your length; if you want your length proof-loaded with its end fittings, put it in the order.

Which other approvals matter for a hydra owner?

Maker websites carry many badges, and most are not about your crane. Lloyd’s, ABS and DNV are classification societies for ships and offshore work, the Directorate General of Mines Safety approves ropes for mines, and the Dock Safety Inspectorate covers port work. ISO 9001 certifies a quality system, not a reel. None of them replaces the ISI mark and the reel certificate on a construction-site crane.

Watch the standard number too. The BIS portal lists IS 2365 : 2024 as steel wire ropes for lifts. A seller quoting IS 2365 is quoting a lift rope standard, and the rope you want for a hydra hoist is an IS 2266 rope matched to the crane maker’s specification.

Buying from a maker, a dealer or a trader

Most small fleets buy through a dealer or trader, not from the plant. That is fine if the paper travels with the reel: the certificate format in the BIS manual names the licensee and its address. If a seller cannot tell you which plant made the rope, treat it as unverified.

Order by the full specification, not the diameter alone; the seven items on the old rope’s tag are listed in the wire rope guide. On a hired-out machine, idle days cost more than the rope, as the crane rental margins breakdown shows. The machine makers themselves are covered in crane manufacturers in India.

When does the old rope have to come off?

The Indian reference is IS 3973 : 1984, the code of practice for selecting, installing and maintaining wire ropes. It sets discard criteria for broken wires, wear and corrosion, and says a rope showing cage or loop formation is to be discarded. The broken-wire limits depend on construction and lay and are tabulated in the wire rope guide. Note the tag details and fitting date when a rope goes on.

The bottom line

For crane rope, the paper matters more than the maker’s name. Any of the six makers above can be the right source if the reel arrives with an ISI tag, a licence number that checks out in the BIS Care app, a scope that covers your construction, and a certificate whose reel number matches. If any of those is missing, ask before the rope goes on the drum. Rope is easier to budget for when the crane is busy; live crane hire and lifting work is posted on the tenders and opportunities board.

Company details are taken from each maker’s own website, and for Shree Steel Wire Ropes its 2025-26 annual report, as read on 22 October 2026. Certification details are from the BIS notice of 20 November 2024, the BIS product manual for IS 2266 : 2024 (January 2025), the BIS standards portal and the DPIIT office memorandum of 4 November 2025. The list is alphabetical and not a ranking. Rules, standards and company ranges change; confirm current terms with the maker, BIS or another official source before you buy.
