Ahmedabad-Mehsana Highway Eight-Lane Stone Laid: Rs 2,600 Crore for SH-41 and a Kalol Viaduct

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on Friday, 30 October, for widening the Ahmedabad-Mehsana highway (State Highway 41) from four lanes to eight. The project is billed at about Rs 2,600 crore. For contractors and machine owners in north Gujarat this is not a plain widening job: a large share of the money goes into structures, and all of it has to be built beside a road that carries more than a lakh vehicles a day.

The work at a glance

  • Stretch: 51.60 km of SH-41 from Adalaj to Palavasna Circle in Mehsana, four lanes to eight, with 7-metre service roads on both sides.
  • Cost: about Rs 2,600 crore at the stone; the Gujarat Cabinet cleared Rs 2,630 crore in January 2026.
  • Structures: a 6.10 km elevated corridor through Kalol, eight flyovers, eight underpasses and a new four-lane railway overbridge.
  • Contractor: bidding closed on 30 May; no coverage we read names the winner.

What was laid on Friday

The stone was one item in a package of more than Rs 14,000 crore that the Prime Minister launched from Banaskantha district on the first day of his Gujarat visit. DeshGujarat reported the highway scope in detail, and the IANS wire carried the four-to-eight-lane widening at Rs 2,600 crore alongside the stones for the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A and 2B extensions. The scope matches what the state set out in January, when it said work would finish within two years of the tender being approved. The elevated corridor through Kalol will tie together five existing overbridges and flyovers, and the existing bridges and culverts along the route are to be widened to the eight-lane width.

Which machines this work needs

Start with the rate. Rs 2,630 crore over 51.60 km comes to about Rs 51 crore a kilometre. A plain widening on an existing formation has run nearer Rs 16 crore a km in the sanctions we have tracked. The Chutupalu-Charhi ghat repair on NH-20 works out to about Rs 40 crore a km, and Dilip Buildcon’s all-elevated corridor at Solapur to about Rs 71 crore a km (our report on that award). The Kalol viaduct and sixteen new grade separators explain most of the gap. No cost split between structures and pavement has been published, so read that as our inference, not a stated figure.

That splits the fleet in two. The structures side needs piling rigs, mobile and crawler cranes for girder erection, batching plants, transit mixers and concrete pumps. The Kalol viaduct is one site that will run for most of the contract, which is where a contractor would want owned cranes and a plant of its own. The flyovers and underpasses are spread over 50 km, and the underpasses mean open-cut digging under live traffic: excavators, backhoe loaders and plate compactors that move from site to site. That is a hire pattern.

The road side is the usual road construction train: shoulder earthwork, then motor graders, soil and tandem rollers, pavers and tippers on short shuttles. Because traffic cannot stop, the service roads will probably come first to carry diverted vehicles, and the main lanes will be built in short stretches. On a job like this, how many hours a machine can work each night matters more than how many machines a contractor owns. The timing helps: the stone landed at the start of Gujarat’s dry season, so the first earthwork can run through to the monsoon.

What follows next

  • The name of the contractor, through a Roads and Buildings Department award or an exchange filing from a listed winner.
  • The phasing of the service roads and traffic diversions around Kalol, which sets when the heavy structure work can start.
  • Whether the two-year timeline set in January survives once work begins.

FAQ
