Construction Equipment Sales September 2026: Retail Up 38%, JCB Claws Back Share

4 min read

Wheeled construction equipment registrations jumped 38% in September 2026 to 6,486 units, the best month of the financial year so far. Two other numbers in FADA’s print matter more to a buyer than that headline: the market leader took share back for the second month running, and the first half of FY27 is barely ahead of last year.

The quick facts

  • Wheeled CE retail: 6,486 units in September 2026, against 4,700 in September 2025 (+38.00%) and 5,166 in August 2026 (+25.55%).
  • April to September FY27: 34,637 units against 34,106 a year earlier, up 1.56%.
  • JCB India: 3,460 units for a 53.35% share, against 2,673 units and 56.87% in September 2025.
  • Rural registrations rose 46.02% year on year; urban rose 27.86%.

What FADA reported

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations builds these figures from RTO registrations. The September data was collated on 3 October from 1,468 of 1,469 RTOs, and Autocar Professional carried the same construction equipment numbers on 6 October. FADA called the category a “sharp festive-led rebound”. Its president, Sai Giridhar, also warned that September is the most base-distorted print of the year, because buyers held off in the week before GST 2.0 took effect on 22 September 2025. That corrects our own August read, where we expected September to be a clean comparison. It isn’t.

Has JCB stopped losing share?

Month on month, yes. JCB went from a 46.56% share in July to 50.43% in August and 53.35% now. Its registrations rose about 33% from August, while everyone else together rose about 18%. Year on year the challengers still grew faster: the rest of the market went from 2,027 units to 3,026, roughly 49%, against JCB’s 29%.

A few movers stand out. Bull Machines went from 96 to 231 units. Schwing Stetter nearly tripled to 109, which points at concrete equipment rather than earthmoving. Caterpillar, Tata Hitachi and CASE each added exactly 50 units. The all-terrain crane line was the only named entry that fell, from 126 to 101.

One gap is worth flagging. Escorts Kubota reported dispatching 795 construction machines in September, while FADA credits it with 431 registrations. The two count different things, but a gap that size just before Navratri and Diwali fits dealers carrying festive stock.

What it means for buyers

Read the half-year number first. At FADA’s July print, FY27 was running 11% behind last year. Two strong months have pulled it to plus 1.56%. That is a recovery, and October, which laps last year’s GST-fuelled festive surge, is the real test.

Our take: a market where the leader is defending share and challengers are stocking dealer yards is a reasonable one to negotiate in. If you are pricing a backhoe loader this season, get written quotes from JCB and at least one of ACE, Escorts Kubota or Bull, each with a validity date. FADA says dealers see price increases eating into the GST gain as their biggest risk this quarter, so a quote that lapses before a price revision is worth less than it looks.

On fuel, FADA’s table puts wheeled CE at 100% diesel and zero electric in September. Plan running costs on that basis.

What to watch

  • The October print, due in early November, which laps last year’s GST-driven festive peak.
  • Whether JCB holds above 53% or the year-on-year slide resumes.
  • Whether Escorts Kubota’s registrations catch up with its 795-unit dispatch month.

Comparing quotes this festive season? Line up two or three brands before you sign, and sort out machine finance early so you can close while dealer stock is high.
