Capacit’e Wins Rs 368.98 Crore Chennai Metro Building Job at Thirumangalam

Capacit’e Infraprojects has a Rs 368.98 crore Letter of Acceptance from Chennai Metro Rail Limited to put up buildings beside the Thirumangalam metro station. For anyone renting out cranes, concrete pumps or transit mixers in Chennai, this is a building job on a cramped urban plot next to a live metro line, and the contractor has said very little yet about how big the structures are.

The quick facts

  • Winner: Capacit’e Infraprojects Ltd. Client: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).
  • Value: Rs 368.98 crore, excluding GST. Disclosed on 6 October 2026.
  • Scope, as filed: buildings near Thirumangalam Metro Station along the viaduct in open land parcels, covering civil, architectural finishes, plumbing, E&M, VAC, lifts and associated works.
  • Not disclosed: floor count, basements, built-up area and completion period.

What Capacit’e announced

The company disclosed the LoA to the exchanges on Tuesday. Upstox and Angel One both carried it with the same value and scope wording, and both quoted managing director Rahul Katyal saying the contract strengthens the company’s presence in the public sector. The order is smaller than the Rs 741 crore Mahindra Lifespace letter of intent we covered in August, and it comes from a public client rather than a private developer.

Which machines does a job like this pull?

Start with the scope list, because it tells you how much of the money is civil. Finishes, plumbing, electrical and mechanical works, ventilation and air conditioning and lifts are all inside the Rs 368.98 crore. On commercial buildings those trades take a large share of the contract, so the concrete-and-steel portion that keeps heavy plant busy is smaller than the headline. No split was given.

What the civil portion needs is predictable even without drawings. Expect a tower crane or two on each building, a boom pump or line pump, and a steady run of transit mixers from a batching plant or a ready-mix supplier. The earthwork side depends on one missing number. If the design has basements, the opening months mean excavators, tippers and shoring rigs. If it doesn’t, the dig is short and the fleet is mostly concrete plant from day one.

The site matters as much as the size. “Along the viaduct” means work next to an operating metro structure, which usually restricts crane slewing over the track, limits night lifts and caps the footprint for stockyards. That favours compact, self-erecting or luffing-jib cranes over a big hammerhead.

Our take: a building contractor of this size usually brings its own formwork and core cranes, so this is not a big new-buy signal. The likely spillover is hire work in Tamil Nadu for concrete pumps and short-term excavation, and that will not start in earnest until Chennai’s northeast monsoon eases, usually by late December.

What to watch

  • The signed agreement and completion period, which set how long plant stays on site.
  • Whether CMRL publishes the building plans: basements change the fleet more than any other detail.
  • Capacit’e’s Q2 FY27 order-book update and any further CMRL station-area packages.
