Tata Hitachi has opened a new warehouse at its Kharagpur plant in West Bengal, and the telling part is what the company did not put a number on. No floor area, no investment value, no parts count. For anyone running a Tata Hitachi machine in the eastern belt, that makes this a signal about intent rather than a measurable change in how fast a part reaches site.
The quick facts
- Tata Hitachi inaugurated a new warehouse at its Kharagpur manufacturing plant in West Bengal on 8 September 2026.
- Sandeep Singh, Managing Director, opened the facility. Hiroshi Hosokawa, President of the Spare Parts and Service Business Unit, attended.
- Company-stated purpose: better warehousing and inventory management, so critical parts and components are handled and made available more efficiently.
- No floor area, investment figure, stock-keeping unit count or committed parts lead time was disclosed.
What Tata Hitachi announced
The announcement went out on 8 September and was carried the same day by Equipment India and Construction World. Kharagpur is one of Tata Hitachi’s two manufacturing plants, the other being Dharwad in Karnataka. Sandeep Singh put the reasoning plainly: “At Tata Hitachi, our commitment to customers extends well beyond the sale of a machine. Ensuring the availability of the right parts and service support at the right time is integral to keeping our customers’ businesses moving.” Hosokawa spoke to the same point, that a strong parts and service network is what holds machine performance together across an owning cycle. Neither executive attached a figure to the facility.
It is the second dated network move from the company in about five weeks. On 5 August 2026 Tata Hitachi opened a regional sales office in Jaipur to cover Rajasthan.
What does this change for equipment buyers?
Parts, not purchase price, is where the money actually goes on a hydraulic excavator over eight to ten years. A 20-tonne class machine standing idle for a week waiting on a travel motor or a final drive costs more than the discount most buyers spend weeks negotiating. A parts warehouse sits closer to the centre of an ownership decision than it first sounds.
Where it sits matters as much as that it exists. Kharagpur puts inventory inside the eastern corridor: West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar and the routes into the Northeast. That is coal country and heavy road-building country. Machines there work long hours in wet ground, and dealer stock thins out at exactly the wrong moment in the working season.
Our take: read this as capability, not a service guarantee. A warehouse at the plant mainly shortens replenishment into the branch and dealer network. It does not automatically shorten the last leg to a site outside Guwahati or Raipur, and there is no published lead-time commitment to measure it against. So stop treating parts support as a brochure line. Ask your dealer what changed after 8 September, in days, for the specific part groups that have stopped your machines before, and get the answer into the service contract rather than the sales conversation.
Buyers weighing a backhoe loader or wheel loader against a rival brand should run the same test across the whole shortlist. JCB, Caterpillar and SANY each operate their own parts networks, and none of them volunteers a lead-time number unless a buyer asks for one directly.
What to watch
- Whether Tata Hitachi publishes a parts fill-rate or lead-time commitment a buyer can hold it to.
- Whether the Jaipur sales office and this warehouse prove to be part of a wider FY27 network build-out.
- Whether rival OEMs answer with eastern-region parts depots of their own.

FAQ
When did Tata Hitachi open the Kharagpur warehouse?
On 8 September 2026, at the company’s existing Kharagpur manufacturing plant in West Bengal. Managing Director Sandeep Singh inaugurated it.
How big is the warehouse and what did it cost?
Tata Hitachi did not disclose the floor area, the investment or how many part numbers the facility stocks. Treat any figure you see quoted elsewhere with caution until the company states one.
Will this get spare parts to my machine faster?
Possibly, but nothing is promised in measurable terms. The company has stated a capability improvement, not a delivery commitment. Ask your dealer for lead times in days, on the part groups that matter to your fleet, and compare them against what you were quoted before September.
