Kamarajar Port Limited, north of Chennai, is inviting bids to develop its second container terminal on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer basis. The concessionaire builds the berth, the container yard and the terminal systems, then runs the terminal for the concession period before handing it back. The tender is a combined request for qualification and request for proposal, published on 20 August 2026 through the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways listing.
Who is likely to bid, and where the civil work goes
The lead bidder will be a terminal operator or port developer. The construction behind it is a large marine and yard civil job: a quay wall or piled berth, dredging of the berth pocket and approach, reclamation and ground improvement for the stacking yard, pavements designed for heavy container handling equipment, and buildings and utilities. Those go out to EPC contractors, and the earthwork, haulage and paving further down to firms in the Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ponneri area.
