AdBlue, also sold as DEF (diesel exhaust fluid), costs about ₹700 to ₹1,350 for a 20-litre can in India, and most listings sit between ₹700 and ₹1,000, which works out to roughly ₹35 to ₹50 a litre. Bought in 210-litre drums it drops to about ₹34 to ₹39 a litre. These are seller listings checked on 29 September 2026.
DEF is only needed on a machine or truck with an SCR exhaust system, and it is used in small amounts next to diesel. This page covers what the fluid is, which machines take it, what it costs by pack, how much a working machine uses in a month, and what goes wrong when the tank runs dry or the fluid is bad.
What is AdBlue or DEF?
DEF is a clear liquid made of 32.5 percent high-purity urea and 67.5 percent de-ionised water. The quality standard for it is ISO 22241, and you will often see it written on the can as “AUS 32” (aqueous urea solution, 32 percent). AdBlue is a registered trade name for the same fluid, which is why people use the two names for one product.
It goes into its own tank, usually with a blue cap, and never into the diesel tank. The engine sprays a small dose into the hot exhaust, where it turns harmful nitrogen oxide gases into nitrogen and water vapour. That system is called SCR (selective catalytic reduction). The BS-CEV emission norms guide explains which emission stage brought SCR in and what it means when you buy a machine.
Which construction machines need DEF in India?
A machine needs DEF only if its engine has SCR. Many CEV Stage IV machines and most CEV Stage V machines with larger engines use it: excavators in the 20-ton class and above, wheel loaders, motor graders and bigger cranes are the usual ones. All BS-VI heavy trucks and tippers on the road also use SCR, so a contractor running tippers will buy DEF even if the machines on site do not need it.
Smaller machines often meet the norm without SCR. JCB, for example, says its CEV Stage IV backhoe loaders with the ecoMAX engine need no exhaust after-treatment at all, so they take no AdBlue. Where a machine does carry a DOC and DPF, those filters sit in the exhaust line with the silencer, and the silencer and exhaust parts guide explains what each piece does and what moves its price. The quick check on your own machine is simple: look for a second, smaller tank with a blue cap, and a DEF gauge or warning symbol on the dashboard. The excavator warning lights guide shows what the DEF symbols look like.
What does AdBlue cost per litre and by pack?
These are listed prices for new, sealed packs of DEF made to ISO 22241, from sellers on IndiaMART and TradeIndia, checked on 29 September 2026.
| Brand or type | Pack | Listed price | About per litre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gulf AdBlue | 20 litres | ₹700 – ₹1,350 | ₹35 – ₹68 |
| Ashok Leyland DEF | 20 litres | ₹880 – ₹1,130 | ₹44 – ₹57 |
| Servo DEF | 20 litres | ₹1,180 (one listing) | ₹59 |
| Tata DEF | 20 litres | ₹700 (one listing) | ₹35 |
| Mahindra DEF | 20 litres | ₹800 (one listing) | ₹40 |
| Mahindra Maxiclean DEF | 10 litres | ₹1,100 (one listing) | ₹110 |
| AUS 32, plain label | 10 litres | ₹380 (one listing) | ₹38 |
| AUS 32, bulk | 210-litre drum | ₹34 – ₹39 a litre | ₹34 – ₹39 |
Most sellers price the 20-litre can, because it is the pack a single machine or truck owner buys. HP Lubricants also sells a 20-litre DEF pack on Flipkart. A fleet that uses more than a few cans a week usually moves to drums with a hand pump, or to a small dispenser tank; one IndiaMART seller lists a mini dispenser unit at about ₹30,000.
Some listings show a price “per litre” that is really the price of the whole can, so read the pack size before comparing. A can offered well below ₹500 for 20 litres is worth a second look at the seal, the batch number and the ISO 22241 mark.
How much DEF does a machine use?
DEF use follows diesel use. Engine makers dose it at a few percent of the diesel burnt; Cummins, for example, states 3 to 4 percent for its SCR engines. A fair planning figure for a construction machine is 3 to 5 litres of DEF for every 100 litres of diesel. The exact rate depends on the engine and the load, and your operator manual or dealer will give it for your model.
Worked example: a 20-ton excavator
Assume a 20-ton class excavator burns 12 litres of diesel an hour. That is an assumption for the sum, not a figure for any one model; your own burn is best measured at the pump, as the guide to excavator fuel consumption per hour explains.
| Item | Per day (8 hours) | Per month (25 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel at 12 litres an hour | 96 litres | 2,400 litres |
| DEF at 3 to 5 percent of diesel | 3 – 5 litres | 72 – 120 litres |
| 20-litre cans needed | — | 4 – 6 cans |
| DEF cost at about ₹900 a can | ₹135 – ₹225 | ₹3,600 – ₹5,400 |
At a diesel price of around ₹95 a litre, the same month’s diesel costs about ₹2.3 lakh. So DEF adds roughly 2 percent to the fuel bill. It is a small cost, but a machine that runs out of it stops earning, which costs far more than the fluid. The diesel cost calculator works out your own monthly diesel figure.
What happens if the AdBlue tank runs dry or the fluid is bad?
The engine control unit watches both the DEF level and its quality. When the level falls low, a warning comes on. If the tank runs empty, or a sensor finds that the fluid is diluted or dirty, the machine is “derated”: engine power and speed are cut, and on many machines it drops to idle after a set time until correct DEF is added. The machine is not damaged by this, but it cannot work properly.
Three mistakes cause most problems in the field:
- Topping up with water. Diluted DEF fails the quality sensor and brings the derate on anyway.
- Mixing farm urea in water to save money. Fertiliser urea carries impurities that clog the dosing injector and damage the catalyst, and that repair costs far more than years of proper DEF.
- Pouring DEF into the diesel tank, or diesel into the DEF tank. Both need the tank drained and flushed before the machine runs again.
How long does DEF last, and how should you store it?
ISO 22241 sets how long sealed DEF stays usable by storage temperature: about 18 months if kept at up to 25°C, 12 months at up to 30°C and 6 months at up to 35°C. Indian summers cut that shelf life, so buy what you will use in a few months, keep cans in the shade, and check the date of manufacture on the can. DEF freezes at about minus 11°C, which matters only in hill states.
- Keep the cap on and use a clean, dedicated jug and funnel that never touch diesel or oil.
- Store DEF in its own plastic can. It attacks copper, brass and some steels, so never decant it into a metal drum that held something else.
- Wipe around the filler neck before opening it. A little dust in DEF is enough to block the dosing filter.
Keeping the DEF tank full sits next to the other small running costs of a modern machine, such as engine oil and the filters in the service schedule. You can also compare machines that fit your work under excavators and motor graders.
