Excavator warning lights are the coloured symbols on the operator’s display that tell you what the machine’s own sensors are seeing. Each lamp watches one system, such as engine oil pressure, coolant temperature or hydraulic oil, and lights up when that system moves outside its normal range. The colour tells you how urgent it is. A red lamp means stop the machine and find out why. An amber or yellow lamp means something is outside normal limits and needs attention soon.
The symbols themselves are not invented by each company. They come from an international standard, ISO 6405-1, which sets the common symbols for operator controls and displays on earth-moving machines. India has adopted it as IS/ISO 6405-1, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards under its earth-moving equipment committee. That is why the temperature lamp on a Tata Hitachi looks much like the one on a JCB, a Komatsu or a Hyundai machine. What is not standard is the fault code that some machines show alongside the lamp, and that difference matters more than most owners expect.
What do the colours red, amber and green mean?
Colour is the fastest thing to read on a display, so learn the colours before you learn the symbols. Under ISO 6405-1, red is used where there is a failure or a condition that needs immediate attention, and yellow or amber is used where something has moved outside its normal operating limits. Green is not a warning at all. It tells you a function is switched on and working.

Build one habit into every operator on your site: if a red lamp appears while the boom is in the air, put the load down first, then stop. Shutting an engine off with a full bucket raised creates a second problem on top of the first.
Which warning lights will you actually see on an excavator?
The lamps on an excavator display fall into a short list, and each points at a system you can check yourself. The table below covers the ones that come up on Indian sites again and again, using the common symbol shapes rather than any one company’s chart.

Two of these lamps get ignored until they turn into a repair bill. The air filter lamp comes on quietly and costs diesel long before anything sounds wrong. The hydraulic oil temperature lamp shows up on a hot afternoon and gets dismissed as normal, when hot oil is exactly what makes a tired cylinder leak past its seals.
Is there a universal excavator error code list?
No, and this is the part of the question that gets answered badly everywhere else. The symbols are standardised, so a thermometer means temperature on any machine. The fault codes are not. A fault code is the number or letter-and-number combination the machine’s control unit shows on the display when it stores a fault, and every manufacturer writes its own code set. The same code can mean completely different things on two machines parked next to each other.
We do not publish a code table, and be careful with any website that offers one for a machine it does not name exactly. Codes change by model and often by production year within the same model. Reading someone else’s chart is how a good sensor gets replaced for a fault that was somewhere else.
What to do instead:
- Write down the code exactly as it appears, along with what the machine was doing at the time
- Find the code in the operator’s manual for your own machine and model year. This is the authority, not a chart from the internet
- If it is not in the operator’s manual, call the dealer’s service desk with the code, the model and the machine’s serial number
- Note the running hours when it appeared. A fault that returns at the same point in a work cycle is a very different problem from one that appeared once
Keep the operator’s manual in the cab, not in an office drawer. It is the one document that turns a code into an answer.
What should you do when a red light comes on?
Treat a red lamp as an instruction rather than a suggestion. The order below works for the three red lamps that matter most, and it keeps the machine and the people around it safe while you work out what happened.
- Stop what the machine is doing. Do not start a new pass or a new lift
- Put the load down. Lower the bucket or the attachment to the ground
- Idle the engine, then shut it off. The exception is engine oil pressure, where you stop the engine at once, because every extra second of running does more damage than the hot shutdown does
- Look before you touch. A hot engine, a hot radiator cap and pressurised hydraulic lines all injure people who are in a hurry
- Check the simple things first. Oil level, coolant level, belt, fan, radiator fins packed with mud, a hydraulic hose weeping
- Do not restart the machine to “see if it clears”. If the fault is real, the second start does the damage the first one did not
One extra note on overheating: never open the radiator cap on a hot machine. Let it cool first. Mud packed into a radiator on a monsoon site causes more overheating than any mechanical fault, and it costs nothing to clean out.

Which lights mean service soon rather than stop now?
Amber lamps are the ones an owner can plan around, and treating them properly is where the money is. An air filter restriction lamp, a hydraulic filter lamp, a water-in-fuel lamp or a service-due lamp all describe a machine that will keep working today and cost you more tomorrow.
The pattern to watch for is a lamp that goes out on its own and comes back. A hydraulic oil temperature lamp that appears every afternoon and clears every morning is not a sensor being fussy. It is telling you the cooling is marginal, and marginal cooling in April becomes a failure in May.
Symptoms often arrive before or alongside the lamp, and reading them together saves guessing. What are the extra warning lights on a CEV Stage V machine?
A machine built to the newer emission rules carries lamps that an older machine simply does not have. Since CEV Stage V came in, larger engines use exhaust after-treatment, and after-treatment brings its own warnings. If you have moved from a ten-year-old machine to a new one, these are the lamps that will be unfamiliar.
- DEF or AdBlue level. AdBlue is a fluid the machine injects into the exhaust to clean it. When the tank runs low the lamp comes on, and if it runs dry most machines cut power until it is filled. Keep an eye on it the way you watch coolant
- Exhaust filter or regeneration. The machine burns off soot collected in its exhaust filter. A lamp tells you it is doing this, or that it needs to. Interrupting the process repeatedly is what blocks the filter properly
- Emission system fault. A fault in the after-treatment system. This one goes to the dealer, not to a roadside mechanic

How do you check the warning lights before starting work?
The check takes about fifteen seconds and it is the cheapest habit on any site. Turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine. On machines that run a lamp check, the display lights every warning lamp for a second or two and then clears them. That tells you the bulbs and the display work.
You are looking for two things: a lamp that does not light during the check, and a lamp that stays on after the engine starts. A lamp that never lights cannot warn you, which is worse than a fault you know about. One that stays on after starting is a live fault to deal with before the machine goes to work.
Whether your machine runs this self-check, and what its display shows, is set out in the operator’s manual. Read that section once and show it to whoever sits in the seat. An operator who knows the difference between the safety lock lamp and a real fault will not call you out to a machine that only needed the lever dropped. What do the warning lights tell you about a used excavator?
On a second-hand machine the display is evidence a seller cannot easily dress up. Do the key-on lamp check yourself before the engine starts. Every lamp should light and then clear.
Three things are worth treating as questions to ask rather than reasons to walk away:
- A lamp that does not light in the self-check. Ask why. A dead bulb is a small job. A lamp that was disconnected because it kept coming on is a different conversation
- Tape, paint or a sticker over part of the display. Look under it
- A stored fault code the seller cannot explain. Write it down and ask the dealer’s service desk what it means for that model before you agree a price
