What is a motor grader used for?
A motor grader is used to level, shape and finish ground surfaces with fine accuracy. The blade in the middle, called the mouldboard, can be tilted, angled and raised by the operator to cut high spots and fill low spots in a single pass. Because the blade sits between the wheels and not out in front, the machine smooths out bumps instead of riding over them, so the finished surface is far more even than a dozer or a tractor blade can manage.

How is a motor grader used in road construction?
In road construction the motor grader is used to prepare and level every earth and gravel layer before the black bitumen top goes down. This is where the machine earns its keep, and on almost every NHAI highway and PMGSY rural road you will find one working.
The grader comes in after the earth has been dumped and roughly spread. It first levels the sub-grade (the natural soil base), then spreads and trims the granular sub-base and base course: the layers of graded stone and gravel that carry the road’s weight. The operator uses the blade angle to build the camber, usually a 2 to 2.5 percent slope from the centre to the edges, so rainwater drains off instead of sitting and softening the road.

Can a motor grader be used for land levelling and site grading?
Yes. Land levelling and site grading are among the most common uses for a motor grader outside of roads. Before a factory, warehouse, township or solar farm is built, the plot has to be made flat and set to the right level so that water drains correctly and foundations sit true.
The grader is well suited to this because of its reach and accuracy. A single mid-size machine can level a large yard far faster and flatter than a backhoe or dozer, and modern graders can take a laser or GPS grade-control system that holds the blade to the exact design level automatically. What is a motor grader used for in mining and haul roads?
In mining and quarrying a motor grader is used to build and maintain haul roads, the wide, heavy-duty earth roads that loaded tipper trucks and dumpers travel on all day. A smooth haul road is not a luxury here; it directly saves money.
When a haul road develops ruts, potholes and washboard bumps, the trucks slow down, burn more diesel, wear out tyres faster and shake their loads. A grader run over the road each shift keeps it smooth, so trucks move faster and cost less to run. In large mines the bigger graders, often above 200 HP, work almost non-stop for exactly this reason.
