What the NH-146 four-lane tender actually covers

The scope is rehabilitation and upgradation of an existing two-lane stretch of NH-146 to four lanes on EPC mode. The chainage in the notice reads from km 0.000 (km 158.600 of the highway) near Berkheri village to km 23.423 (km 181.800) near Lehdara village, a total length of 23.423 km. The estimate is ₹274.21 crore, which comes to roughly ₹11.7 crore per kilometre. That is a normal rate for widening a road that already exists, and the word rehabilitation in the title matters: a good part of the value will sit in reworking the existing pavement rather than building new formation from scratch.

One date has already moved. A corrigendum was issued on 13 August carrying Schedule H, and the closing date now stands at 30 September 2026 with opening on 1 October. Madhya Pradesh has a deep bench of road contractors who work NHAI and MPRDC jobs, so expect real competition on rates.

For machine owners the read is different. A 23 km widening job runs for two seasons and needs hired fleet in waves rather than all at once: earthmoving first, then pavement. If you hire out tippers, compactors or pavers in the Sagar and Damoh belt, the contractor who wins this will be looking for local capacity rather than moving everything in from outside.

What the site will run on

Widening in place is awkward work. Excavators and backhoe loaders open the shoulder and the new carriageway, but they do it beside live traffic, so the machines that earn their keep are the ones that can work a narrow front and get off the road quickly. Motor graders and soil compactors follow on the formation, and tippers move both the borrow coming in and the milled material going out.

Rehabilitation of the old pavement brings milling and reclamation into the picture, then pavers with tandem and pneumatic rollers for the new layers. Culvert and cross-drainage work along 23 km calls for transit mixers, a batching plant within haul and concrete pumps at the deeper structures. Cranes come in where any structure needs girders placed.
