The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has invited bids worth ₹816.10 crore for a hybrid cable stayed and suspension bridge across the Krishna River on NH-167K, between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, closing 28 September 2026.
The crossing runs from design chainage km 87.360 to km 88.437, so a little over a kilometre of structure. It is being built on EPC terms and the notice describes it as an iconic bridge, which in practice means the design carries architectural requirements on top of the structural ones.
A hybrid cable stayed and suspension bridge
Most Indian river crossings are girder bridges on piers. This is not one of them. A hybrid design combines cable stays near the towers with a suspended centre span, which lets the structure cross a wider stretch of the Krishna without founding piers in the deepest water.
That decision drives everything else. Tower foundations and the towers themselves become the dominant construction risk, cable supply and stressing come from a small pool of specialist suppliers, and the erection sequence has to be modelled rather than assumed. Very few Indian contractors have built one, so a joint venture with a bridge specialist is the usual route in.
The river itself sets the calendar. Krishna flows are heavy in the monsoon and the foundation work has to reach a safe stage before the season turns.
What the numbers say
Earnest money is ₹8,16,10,000, exactly one per cent of the estimate, with a tender fee of ₹1,18,000. The bid runs across two covers with 120-day validity, and the document set includes a priced BOQ. Bid opening is in New Delhi on 29 September 2026.
This tender has been extended seven times since it was first published on 30 December 2025, which usually signals either a thin bidder field or unresolved queries on the design. Read the corrigenda in order before you price, because on a bridge of this type an addendum can change the structural scope rather than just the dates.
Who this is for
The main contract belongs to specialist bridge builders and their joint venture partners. But a bridge of this size sitting on the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh border creates two or three years of steady demand for hired plant on both banks, along with approach road work, river training and access construction that mid-size regional firms can pick up.
Plant a cable stayed crossing runs
The foundations decide the fleet. Piling rigs work the tower and anchorage foundations, with heavy cranes handling casing, reinforcement cages and the formwork that climbs the towers. Concrete has to arrive without interruption for the tower pours, so batching capacity, standby plant and transit mixers get planned around continuity rather than average output.
Erection then depends on very high capacity cranes and, for the suspended span, purpose-built lifting gear rather than standard plant. On the approaches the work is conventional road building: excavators cutting and loading, tippers hauling, compactors and rollers building the embankment up to deck level, and backhoe loaders on drains and protection works. River bank protection at the end brings stone pitching and more excavator time.

FAQ
What is the Krishna River bridge tender on NH-167K?
MoRTH has invited EPC bids for a hybrid cable stayed and suspension bridge across the Krishna River from design chainage km 87.360 to km 88.437, on the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh border. The estimate is ₹816.10 crore and bids close on 28 September 2026.
What are the EMD and tender fee?
Earnest money is ₹8,16,10,000, exactly one per cent of the estimate, and the tender fee is ₹1,18,000.
What is a hybrid cable stayed and suspension bridge?
It combines two systems. Cable stays run from the towers to the deck over the shorter lengths, while the centre span hangs from a main suspension cable. The combination crosses a wide river without founding piers in the deepest water.
Which contractors can realistically bid?
Specialist bridge builders and joint ventures that include one. Very few Indian firms have built a hybrid cable stayed crossing, and the cable supply, tower construction and erection sequence all need proven experience.
