Two of the worst ghat sections on the Ranchi to Hazaribagh road are being rebuilt for safety at ₹140.81 crore, and the Chutupallu Ghati tender closes at 11:00 AM on 25 November 2026.
Two ghats, one contract
NHAI wants rectification of black spot locations at Chutupallu Ghati from chainage 92.885 to 97.920 and at the Charahi Ghati section from chainage 51.540 to 52.500 on NH-33, now NH-20, under NH(O) on EPC mode in Jharkhand. The reference is NHAI/11012/JH/ Chutupallu Charahi/2026/E 298353 and it comes through Head Office Technical.
A black spot is a location with a recorded accident history, and rectification usually means geometry: easing a curve, flattening a gradient, widening to give sight distance, adding crash barriers and fixing the drainage that was making the surface slippery. Chutupallu Ghati in particular is a steep, winding descent carrying heavy coal traffic.
Bid terms and a long running notice
The portal shows ₹1,40,81,00,000 as the estimate, an EMD of ₹1,41,00,000 at roughly 1 per cent with no exemption, and a fee of ₹20,000. The form of contract is item rate and the work period is 730 days. The notice has been up since 8 May 2026, which means the deadline has been pushed more than once and the document set is well known in the market.
Geometry improvement on a ghat means cutting into the hill on one side and building out on the other. Excavators with breakers take the rock, tippers move it, and the fill side needs retaining walls, so transit mixers and a crane are on site from early on. Once the alignment is right, a motor grader and compactors rebuild the pavement. The hard part is doing all of it while loaded trucks grind up the ghat, so night working and tight traffic management decide whether the 730 days are enough. Our guide to road construction equipment covers the fleet for this kind of hill package.
