The Kanupur project is replacing open field channels with buried pipe across 2,482 hectares, and the ₹57.21 crore Kanupur irrigation tender closes at 5:00 PM on 26 November 2026.
Pipes instead of channels
The Chief Construction Engineer of the Kanupur Irrigation Project has tendered construction of the distribution system for 2,482.16 hectares of culturable command area, including command area development, through underground pipelines. The scope takes in survey, investigation, planning, design and estimate, on EPC mode with five years of operation and maintenance, at Basudevpur in Keonjhar district. Reference is CCE, KIP (KCD-I)-15/2026-27 and the value is ₹57,20,84,000 on a turnkey contract.
Underground piped irrigation is becoming the default for new command area work in Odisha. It loses less water than a lined channel, needs no land acquisition strip, and lets the department deliver water on demand. For the contractor it swaps earthwork volume for pipe laying rate and jointing quality.
Design responsibility and a five year tail
EMD is ₹57,20,900, 1 per cent of the estimate, with exemption allowed, and the fee is ₹10,000. Bids open at 11:00 AM on 27 November. The portal does not give a construction period, so the document is where to find it, and the five years of operation and maintenance sit on top of whatever that is.
Because survey and design are inside the scope, the winner carries the performance risk for whether the network actually delivers water to the tail. That favours firms with piped irrigation experience over general civil contractors. Odisha has the Upper Indravati lift canal tender and the Gompakonda canal lining tender open as well.
A trenching job spread over a lot of ground
Command area pipe work is many kilometres of shallow trench across farmland rather than one deep line. Backhoe loaders are the workhorse because they move between fields easily and dig the branch lines quickly, with an excavator on the mains and the crossings. Valve chambers and outlet structures need mixers, and a small compactor closes the trench in lifts so the pipe is not damaged. Work has to be sequenced around the cropping calendar, since you cannot trench through a standing crop, and that scheduling constraint is what usually decides whether the programme holds.
