Ambuja Cements has put a number on its next round of plants: about Rs 14,500 crore to add roughly 30 million tonnes a year of cement capacity across six states. For a machine buyer the more useful detail is the mix. Most of the new tonnage is grinding units, with fresh clinker lines at three sites, and that decides which machines get bought, for how long, and by whom.
Key numbers
- Growth capex of about Rs 14,500 crore for roughly 30 MTPA of new cement capacity, through greenfield and brownfield projects.
- New grinding capacity by cluster: West 15.5 MTPA, East 11.6 MTPA and North 2.9 MTPA, which adds up to the 30 MTPA headline.
- States named: Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. New clinker capacity is planned at Umrangso in Assam and at Maratha and Mundra in the West cluster.
- Capacity today is 113.5 MTPA, due to reach 119 MTPA by March 2027 and 155 MTPA by FY30 once debottlenecking is added.
What Ambuja announced
Ambuja set out the programme on 2 November 2026 alongside its July-September results. InvestyWise carried the cluster split, the clinker sites and the company’s target of a cost near Rs 4,000 per tonne by FY28. Trade Brains reported the same capacity path: 4.6 MTPA added in the first half of FY27 and another 5.6 MTPA to be commissioned or ramped up in the second half.
One change is easy to miss. A year ago, with its results on 3 November 2025, Ambuja raised its FY28 target from 140 MTPA to 155 MTPA, mainly through debottlenecking. The same 155 MTPA figure now carries an FY30 date and depends on new plants as well. In effect the target has moved out by two years.
Does this change what a contractor should buy?
Not much on the earthmoving side, and it helps to say why. Rs 14,500 crore across 30 MTPA works out to about Rs 483 crore per million tonnes. Most of that money goes on mills, separators, kilns, conveyors and silo equipment, not on site work. The civil slice is a minority, as it is on most process-plant budgets.
Grinding units are compact sites. Building one is mostly a foundations-and-structures job: piling, raft pours, slipformed silos and steel erection. That means mobile and crawler cranes for the mill and separator lifts, concrete pumps and batching plant, and a short excavation phase with 20 to 30-tonne excavators. Contractors usually hire for this rather than buy, because each site’s civil window is short.
The clinker lines are where demand lasts. A kiln eats limestone every day for decades, so any extra clinker at Umrangso, Maratha or Mundra means more tonnes moved out of a quarry or through a port. Ambuja did not say which mines will feed the new lines. Where it is a captive pit, the quarry fleet of drills, rock breakers, excavators and dumpers is the steady buyer, long after the construction crews have left.
Our view, hedged because Ambuja gave no site-by-site schedule: the most predictable purchase is the one that comes once the plants are running. Every grinding unit handles clinker, gypsum and fly ash in open yards, and wheel loaders do that work on every shift. Ambuja has not said how many units make up the 30 MTPA, but each one will need its own yard fleet between now and FY30.

Dates to note
- By March 2027: another 5.6 MTPA commissioned or ramped up, taking capacity to 119 MTPA.
- FY28: Ambuja’s target of a cost near Rs 4,000 per tonne.
- FY30: the 155 MTPA target, two years later than the FY28 date given in November 2025.
- Still to come: site-wise timelines and the construction and equipment orders for each unit.
FAQ
How much is Ambuja Cements spending on the expansion?
About Rs 14,500 crore of growth capex for roughly 30 MTPA of new capacity, aimed at 155 MTPA by FY30.
Where will the new plants come up?
In Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. New clinker capacity is planned at Umrangso in Assam and at Maratha and Mundra in the West cluster.
Has the 155 MTPA target changed?
Its date has. In November 2025 Ambuja gave 155 MTPA as an FY28 target, mostly from debottlenecking. The plan announced on 2 November 2026 puts it at FY30, with new plants included.
