A transit mixer’s capacity is the volume of mixed concrete the drum is rated to carry, measured in cubic metres (m³) — written as cum on most Indian sites and quote sheets. Across the standard transit mixer barrels listed on DesiMachines, that rating runs from 3 m³ to 12 m³, while a complete ready-mix truck (chassis plus barrel) carries 6 m³ to 11 m³. In everyday Indian site work, 6, 7 and 8 m³ are the sizes you will actually see on the road.
The number matters more than most first-time buyers expect. Capacity decides how many trips you make in a day, and — because wet concrete is heavy — it also decides which truck chassis you are allowed to put the barrel on. This page works through both, using the published figures for the machines sold in India today.
What is the capacity of a transit mixer?
A transit mixer’s capacity is its nominal filling capacity — the amount of already-mixed concrete the drum may carry, not the size of the steel shell. The barrel is always physically bigger than its rating. That extra space is deliberate: the drum keeps turning on the road so the concrete does not set, and it needs room to tumble without slopping out of the opening.
So a “6 cum mixer” holds 6 cubic metres of concrete. It does not hold 6 cubic metres of steel drum. When you compare two machines, compare the nominal filling capacity, because that is the figure both the batching plant and your customer will bill against.
One more term worth knowing on day one: RMC means ready-mixed concrete — concrete batched at a plant and delivered wet. A transit mixer is the truck that does that delivery, which is why these machines are often just called RMC trucks or mixer trucks.
Transit mixer capacity chart: sizes, weights and example models
Here is what the barrels themselves weigh and carry, taken from the makers’ published specification sheets. “Concrete carried” is the weight of the wet load when the drum is filled to its rating.

Specifications above are as per the current August 2026 listings. Where a maker does not publish the loaded weight on a model, the row says “Not specified” rather than a guess.
Every barrel also carries its own water tank, between 300 and 650 litres depending on size. That water is for washing the drum and chute after a pour, not for mixing on the move.
How much does one cubic metre of concrete weigh?
About 2,400 kg (2.4 Tonne) per cubic metre. That figure is consistent right across the sheets: a 6 m³ barrel is rated at 14,400 kg of concrete, a 9 m³ at 21,600 kg, a 12 m³ at 28,800 kg. Multiply cubic metres by 2,400 and you have the load in kilograms.
This is the single most useful number on this page, and it is where a lot of first-time owners get caught. Concrete is far heavier than the sand or aggregate a tipper of the same size carries. An 8 m³ load is 19.2 Tonne of concrete alone — before you count the 4-odd Tonne of barrel and the weight of the truck under it.
A quick way to sanity-check any quote: if a supplier tells you a 28-Tonne truck can run 10 m³, work it out. Ten cubic metres is 24 Tonne of concrete plus roughly 5 Tonne of barrel. That is 29 Tonne of payload on a chassis rated for 28 Tonne gross, which already includes the truck itself. The sum does not work, and an overloaded mixer is an RTO problem, a tyre problem and a brake problem all at once.
Which truck do you need for a 6, 8 or 10 cubic metre mixer?
The barrel and the chassis are sold together as a ready-mix truck, and the chassis rating is what limits the drum size. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is the maximum the loaded vehicle may legally weigh — truck, barrel, concrete, driver, diesel, everything.
Across the complete truck-mounted transit mixers sold in India, the pattern is clear: 28,000 kg GVW chassis carry 6 to 9 m³, and once you want 10 or 11 m³ you move to a 35,000 kg GVW chassis.

Those listed prices are ex-factory and already include GST. On-road cost adds transportation, RTO registration, TCS, warranty, insurance and FOC charges where applicable — a mixer truck is a registrable vehicle, so budget for all of it. What size transit mixer should you buy?
Match the drum to your pour size and your road, in that order.
6 m³ is the workhorse for city and semi-urban work — slabs, columns, small commercial jobs. It fits down narrower approach roads and turns in tighter yards, and a 28-Tonne chassis handles it comfortably. If most of your work is residential buildings and you are not sure, this is the safe first machine.
7 to 8 m³ suits steady plant-to-site running where the road is good and the distance is real. You carry a third more per trip than a 6, on the same class of chassis, so your cost per cubic metre drops. This is the most common size in the Indian ready-mix fleet.
9 m³ and above only pays back on highway, metro and large industrial work where you are pouring hundreds of cubic metres and the haul road is built for it. The 10 and 11 m³ drums need the heavier 35-Tonne chassis, which costs more to buy, more to register and more to run. On a village approach road, a big drum is a liability, not an advantage.
Two practical checks before you decide. First, the batching plant: there is no point owning a 10 m³ drum if your plant batches in 6 m³ cycles, because you will wait. Second, the site gate — measure it. The taller ready-mix trucks stand around 3,000 to 3,830 mm high and up to 3,100 mm across, and a low tree branch or a narrow gali will decide the machine for you regardless of what the economics say.
How is a self-loading mixer’s capacity different?
A self-loading concrete mixer (often called an SLCM) loads its own sand, aggregate and cement with a front bucket, mixes them on board, and drives to the pour. Its rating means something different as a result: it is the volume of concrete the machine can produce per batch, rather than a volume it simply transports.
Across the self-loading mixers available in India, batch sizes cluster between 2.0 m³ and 4.8 m³, with one machine, the Universal SLM-4, listing a larger 5.4 m³ drum. Prices run from around ₹27 – 30 Lakhs for a small 3.2 m³ machine up to ₹52 – 54 Lakhs for a 4.3 m³ Fiori DBS 4300 (indicative, as of Aug 2026).
So a self-loader is smaller per batch but independent — no plant, no separate loader, no waiting. A transit mixer is bigger per trip but needs a batching plant behind it. What does capacity cost you in running terms?
Capacity is not free. A bigger drum means a heavier empty vehicle, so you burn diesel carrying steel even on the return leg. It means more tyres on the ground and a bigger service bill. The honest way to size a machine is per cubic metre delivered, not per trip. Work out how many cubic metres you realistically move in a month, how far the average haul is, and whether the extra 2 m³ will actually be filled every trip. A 9 m³ drum running half full is a more expensive 4.5 m³ mixer.
