Excavator bucket capacity is how much material one bucket holds, measured in cubic metres (m³). It is a volume, not a weight: a 1.0 m³ bucket holds 1,000 litres of loose soil in one scoop. Across the 294 excavators listed on DesiMachines, published bucket capacities run from 0.04 m³ (40 litres) on a 1,800 kg (1.8 Ton) mini machine to 6.5 m³ (6,500 litres) on a 94 tonne quarry machine, and larger again on mining excavators. The common 20 tonne class sits at 0.9 to 1.2 m³, as per the current August 2026 spec sheets.

What does excavator bucket capacity mean?

Bucket capacity is the space inside the bucket, written in cubic metres. One cubic metre is 1,000 litres, roughly the volume of a small water tank. So a machine rated at 0.9 m³ picks up about 900 litres of loose earth every time the operator fills the bucket properly.

Two versions of the figure exist and it pays to know which one you are reading. Struck capacity is the bucket filled level with the rim. Heaped capacity is the bucket filled with material piled above the rim at the angle it naturally settles at, which is what happens on site. Heaped is the larger number and is the one normally published, including in the tables below. Ask the dealer to confirm before you compare two machines, because comparing a heaped figure against a struck one makes one machine look bigger than it is.

A second point catches first-time buyers. Capacity says nothing about weight. The same bucket that comfortably holds a cubic metre of dry sand will overload the machine if you fill it with wet clay, because wet clay is heavier. Weight is handled separately, by the machine’s operating weight and its lift rating, and the section further down converts cubic metres into tonnes.

You will also see bucket capacity written as cum or cu.m on Indian spec sheets and dealer quotations. That is the same cubic metre, written short.

What is the bucket capacity of a 20 ton excavator?

A 20 tonne (20,000 kg) excavator in India carries a standard bucket of 0.9 to 1.2 m³ (900 to 1,200 litres). This is the class most contractors buy, and the figures are tightly clustered because every manufacturer sizes the bucket to what the machine’s hydraulics and weight can lift all day without strain.

The machines in the 15 to 25 tonne class we list publish capacities from 0.48 m³ up to 1.85 m³, but both ends of that span are options rather than standard fitment. The small figures are narrow buckets for trenching, and the large ones are light material buckets meant for loose overburden rather than hard digging. Half the machines in the class start at 0.92 m³ or below and top out at 1.20 m³ or above, which is where the practical answer of 0.9 to 1.2 m³ comes from.

For a rough site sum: moving 16 m³ of loose material takes roughly 20 passes with a 0.9 m³ bucket and about 15 with a 1.2 m³ one, once you allow for the bucket not filling completely every time. Over a day that difference is real, which is why the section on bigger buckets below is worth reading before you order one.

Excavator bucket capacity by size class

Bucket capacity tracks machine weight almost exactly. The table sets out every excavator size class we list, with the capacity most machines in that class carry and the full span of published figures inside it. All figures are heaped capacities taken from the machines’ own specifications, current as of August 2026.

The typical column is the middle of each class: half the machines listed start below the first figure and half top out above the second. The full span includes every option a manufacturer publishes for those machines, narrow trenching buckets at one end and oversized light material buckets at the other. Two published figures sit far outside their own class and are left out of the spans above while we check them with the manufacturer.

The jump at the top of the table is the mining bracket. Above 50 tonnes the class runs from ordinary quarry machines at 1.65 m³ all the way to the 800 tonne face shovels used in coal and iron ore, where a single bucket holds 47.5 m³. Those giants are a separate world from anything a road or building contractor buys, and they stretch the span without telling you much about the machines below them. Where a model shows a range, the manufacturer offers several buckets for that machine and the range covers the smallest to the largest. How many tonnes does one bucket of soil weigh?

Multiply the bucket capacity by the density of what you are digging. Loose earth weighs roughly 1.4 to 1.6 tonne per cubic metre, sand and aggregate about 1.5 to 1.6, and wet clay or silt more again. So a 1.0 m³ bucket lifts around 1.5 tonne of dry soil, and appreciably more when the same soil is soaked after rain.

This arithmetic is why buckets get sized down for heavy, wet work rather than up. It also explains a complaint every dealer hears in the monsoon: the machine that filled its bucket easily in April is straining in July, on the same site, with the same bucket. The soil has not changed. Its water content has.

One warning on billing. Material sitting undisturbed in the ground takes up less space than the same material once it is dug out and loose in the bucket, because of the air between the pieces. Earthwork is normally measured in the ground, so your bucket count will overstate the quantity billed. The output per hour guide works through that conversion properly.

Why do long reach machines carry such small buckets?

Because reach costs lifting power. A long reach excavator puts the same weight of material much further from the machine, and the further out a load sits, the harder it pulls the machine forward. The manufacturer answers that by shrinking the bucket. Most of the 12 long reach machines we list carry about 0.50 m³, roughly half of what the same weight class carries with a standard arm.

You see the same logic in the JCB NXT 245HD LR, a 23,850 kg machine rated at 0.45 m³, against ordinary machines of that weight at 1.2 m³. Nothing is wrong with either number. They are answering different questions: one is built to dig fast close in, the other to reach 15 metres across a canal or a pond and still stay planted.

Demolition and material handling versions follow the same rule, and so do the lambi boom wali machines contractors hire for canal desilting. If you are buying for reach rather than volume, judge the machine on what it can hold at full extension, not on bucket size alone.

Does a bigger bucket always move more material?

No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in the whole subject. Output per hour is bucket capacity multiplied by how full the bucket actually gets, multiplied by cycles per hour. Fit a bucket that is too large and the machine cannot fill it in hard material, so you carry a half full bucket, the cycle slows down because the hydraulics are working near their limit, and you burn extra diesel to move the same soil.

A factory-fitted bucket is sized for the machine by people who tested it. Treat that as your default. Go larger only for genuinely light material such as loose sand, ash or overburden, and go smaller for rock, hard murrum and anything that comes out in lumps. The other half of the answer is bucket shape, not size. A rock bucket, a ditching bucket and a general purpose bucket of identical capacity behave completely differently in the same soil. How do you check bucket capacity before you buy?

Four checks, and none of them take long.

Read the figure off the machine’s own specification rather than the brochure headline, and confirm whether it is struck or heaped. Ask which bucket the quoted price includes, because a machine offered with an option range is usually priced with the standard bucket and the large one costs extra. Compare like with like across brands: a 0.9 m³ heaped figure and a 0.9 m³ struck figure are not the same bucket. And check the bucket physically on a used machine, since worn teeth and a stretched bucket lip mean the real capacity is below what the sticker says. Bucket capacity is a volume in cubic metres, published heaped, and it rises in step with machine weight: about 0.10 m³ on a mini machine, 0.57 to 0.70 m³ in the 6 to 15 tonne class, 0.9 to 1.2 m³ on the common 20 tonne machine, and 1.5 to 2.3 m³ once you get above 25 tonnes. Multiply by roughly 1.5 to get tonnes of loose earth. Stay with the factory bucket unless your material is unusually light or unusually hard, and remember that a bucket which never fills is costing you more than a smaller one that does.
