The Public Enterprises Selection Board has recommended Sundaresan S for Director (Mining and Construction Business) at BEML, the division that puts the company’s dumpers, dozers, excavators and loaders in front of coal and mining buyers. The recommendation still needs the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet to sign off, and the post itself does not fall vacant until 1 October 2026. For anyone sizing up a BEML fleet order this financial year, both of those dates matter more than the appointment itself.
Indian Masterminds and PSU Watch both reported the selection from the same day’s PESB sitting, and their accounts agree on the candidate, the panel size and the pending ACC step. The directorship is a board-level seat reporting to BEML’s Chairman and Managing Director. The advertised scope covers design and development, manufacturing and the performance of earthmoving equipment and other machines used for mining and construction. Because the mining and construction vertical is currently carrying BEML’s order growth. In the June quarter the company booked Rs 1,181 crore of fresh orders, and Rs 589 crore of that came from mining and construction alone, ahead of defence at Rs 581 crore. The background of the incoming director is the part worth reading. He comes from metro rolling stock and Vande Bharat sleeper production, which is a factory and delivery job rather than a mining sales one. Our take: that points at throughput, lead times and delivery discipline as the likelier near-term focus, not an aggressive run at market share. If you are comparing a BEML dumper or dozer against Caterpillar, Komatsu or a Tata Hitachi machine on price alone, do not budget for a discount war on the back of this.
The timing is the practical risk. A seat that empties on 1 October, with the ACC nod still outstanding, sits right at the start of the post-monsoon window when coal and mining fleets get ordered.
