West Bengal’s Irrigation and Waterways Department is replacing a dilapidated sluice and road bridge at Basanti with a ₹27.61 crore nine-vent structure, closing 19 September 2026.
Replacing a structure that carries two jobs
The existing eight-vent sluice cum road bridge over Goranbose khal at Radharanipur has reached the end of its life. The replacement is a nine-vent sluice cum RCC road bridge with a 4.250 metre clear carriageway width, in Basanti block and police station area of South 24 Parganas. A sluice cum road bridge does double duty: it regulates water in the khal and carries the road across it, which means the gates, the vents and the deck all have to work as one structure. In the Sundarbans belt this kind of asset is also the flood-control line for the land behind it, so the build quality question is not academic.
Third call, and what that tells you
The notice is marked as a third call against the second, which means the department has retendered twice. That usually points to bids that came in high, or to eligibility terms that thinned the field. Either way it is useful information: study the schedule of rates against current market prices before you assume the previous bidders were simply greedy. Earnest money is ₹50,00,000 with exemption allowed, about 1.81 per cent of the estimate, and the tender fee is nil. Two covers, 120-day bid validity, percentage basis, withdrawal allowed. A corrigendum on 31 August 2026 extended the time, so read the current notice.
Working in Sundarbans ground
This site is soft alluvium in a tidal delta, and that drives the machine list. Piling is almost certain for the vent structure, so a piling rig plus a crawler crane for cages. Excavators handle the cofferdam and the channel work, and long-reach machines earn their place where you cannot get plant close to the water. Dewatering runs continuously, because tidal influence in Basanti means the working level moves through the day. A backhoe loader does the approach and access work, compactors build the road embankments either side of the deck, and tippers bring in every bit of aggregate, since there is no local stone. Plan barge or causeway access before you plan the programme.
