The Uttarakhand Irrigation Department has put the Khairna barrage drinking water project in Nainital district out to bid at Rs 215.54 crore, and the Khairna barrage tender closes at 03:00 PM on 18 November 2026.
The largest water job on the portal this week
The notice is for construction of the Khairna Barrage Drinking Water Project in district Nainital, Uttarakhand, categorised on the portal as civil works for water works. The Chief Engineer for the Uttar region at Haldwani is the owner, through the Superintending Engineer of the Irrigation Working Circle at Haldwani, under e-tender notice no. 09/SE/2026-27. The value is Rs 2,15,54,00,000 with 1,095 days allowed.
Khairna sits on the Kosi river on the road from Bhowali towards Almora, and a barrage there is the usual answer to a hill water supply problem: hold the river at a reliable level so intake works can draw year round rather than only in the wet months. At this value the scope will take in the barrage structure, intake, pumping and the transmission that follows.
A real deposit, and three years to deliver
The deposit is Rs 4,31,00,000, exactly 2 per cent of the estimate, and exemption is not allowed, so bidders need the cash or a bank guarantee ready. The fee is only Rs 5,900. Bids open at 03:30 PM on the same day they close, so there is no window for a late correction.
Three years on a river structure in Kumaon means planning the work around the monsoon. Barrage foundations, diversion and dewatering all have to happen in the dry window, and a programme that assumes twelve usable months a year will fail. Other Uttarakhand water work is live too, including the 6.50 MLD plant and sewer network at Jaspur and two sewage plants at Barkot in Uttarkashi.
River work needs reach and lifting
A barrage is a dewatering and concrete job before it is anything else. Long reach excavators handle the river bed, the coffer dam and the spoil, with tippers running material to and from the site on a single hill road. Gate structures, piers and the raft take large pours, so transit mixers and a batching setup near site matter more than they would on a road job, and a crane is needed through the whole gate and hoist installation. Wheel loaders feed the plant and compactors handle the approach and embankment work. Access roads and the pipeline trenching bring in backhoe loaders.
