A wheel loader’s service capacities are the volumes of diesel and oil the machine holds when it is filled properly: the fuel tank, the engine oil, the hydraulic tank and the oil in each axle. On machines sold in India these run from about 80 litres of diesel on a 4 tonne compact loader to over 700 litres on a 51 tonne mining machine. Knowing the numbers for your own loader is what stops you buying the wrong quantity of oil at service time, and it is the quickest way to work out how long a full tank will keep the machine working.

What is the fuel tank capacity of a wheel loader?

Most wheel loaders working on Indian sites carry between 165 and 300 litres of diesel. The tank grows with the machine, because a bigger engine burns more and nobody wants to stop a loading cycle to refuel.

A small 10 to 11 tonne machine such as the Tata Hitachi TL340H Prime holds 165 litres, and the Hyundai HL630I-V holds 200 litres. Step up to the common 17 to 18 tonne size and the JCB 455-5N takes 280 litres while the XCMG ZL55GV takes 300 litres. The compact end is much smaller: the 4 tonne ACE ALN 100 holds just 80 litres.

Mining machines are in another world altogether. The Cat 994K carries 3,445 litres, which is more diesel than most contractors buy in a month.

Wheel loader fuel and oil capacities by size class

The table below puts the four numbers side by side for machines across the range. Hydraulic tank means the tank volume, not the total system volume, which is always higher because oil also sits in the cylinders, pipes and cooler.

Read down the fuel column and the pattern is clear: diesel capacity tracks machine size closely. Engine oil does not rise as neatly, because it depends on engine design rather than machine weight. The Cat 972L is heavier than the Volvo L150H but takes half the engine oil.

How much engine oil does a wheel loader take?

Between about 12 and 26 litres for the machines most Indian contractors run, and 50 litres or more on the large ones. The 17 to 18 tonne class sits around 20 to 26 litres: the XCMG ZL55GV takes 20 litres, the JCB 455-5N 22 litres, and the Liugong 856H MAX 26 litres.

That figure is the refill quantity including the new filter. Buy oil in the pack size that matches: a 20 litre pack covers a 20 litre change with nothing left over, and a machine needing 26 litres means either a 26 litre purchase or a part-used second pack that has to be stored clean and sealed.

Use the grade the manufacturer specifies, not the cheapest drum on the shelf. Wheel loaders spend their lives at full engine load, changing direction every few seconds, and thin or wrong-grade oil shows up as bearing wear long before it shows up on the dipstick.

On interval, most makers ask for an engine oil and filter change every 250 to 500 hours, with the first change earlier on a new machine while the engine beds in. Dusty work shortens it. A loader feeding a crusher in a stone quarry breathes far more dust than one shifting sand at a batching plant, and the oil darkens faster to match. If you run in that kind of dust, treat the manual figure as the maximum rather than the target, and change the air filter on its own schedule.

How much hydraulic oil does a wheel loader hold?

The hydraulic tank on a typical Indian wheel loader holds 90 to 225 litres. The L&T 9020 tank is 90 litres, the Tata Hitachi ZW225 CEV 5 is 171 litres and the Liugong 856H MAX is 225 litres.

Two points matter here. First, the tank figure is not the whole system. When you drain and refill after a repair, you will need more oil than the tank number, because the cylinders, hoses and cooler hold their own share. Second, hydraulic oil on a loader does heavy work: it lifts the boom, curls the bucket and, on most machines, powers the steering. Contaminated hydraulic oil is one of the more expensive faults on this machine, and it usually starts with a torn breather or a filter left in too long.

Why do the axles need their own oil?

Because a wheel loader drives through both axles, and each one carries its own oil bath for the differential and the final drives. This is oil most first-time owners forget, and it is not a small amount: the JCB 455-5N holds 35 litres in each axle, the Cat 950L 43 litres each, and the Tata Hitachi ZW 310-5A 48 litres each.

Add it up on a mid-size machine and the axles hold more oil than the engine and hydraulic tank combined on some models. Axle oil in a loader working a quarry gets hot and dirty, and skipping the change is how a final drive fails on a machine that is otherwise healthy.

Front and rear are not always the same quantity, either. The Volvo L150H takes 46 litres in the front axle and 55 litres in the rear, so ordering “two axles worth” of oil off a single figure leaves you short. Check both numbers before the service, and remember that the front axle on a loader does more work than the rear, because that is the end carrying the load.

How long does a tank of diesel last on a payloader?

Long enough for a shift on most machines, which is exactly what the tank is sized for. A wheel loader on steady truck-loading work burns roughly 10 to 20 litres of diesel an hour depending on size and how hard it is pushing, so a 280 litre tank on an 18 tonne machine covers a normal working day with margin.

That band is a field guide, not a specification. No manufacturer publishes a fuel consumption figure for a loader, because it swings with the material, the pile, the cycle distance and the operator. The reliable way to know your own machine is to fill the tank, work a week, refill it and divide the litres by the hour-meter reading. One practical note for quarry and crusher work: short cycles with a full bucket burn far more per hour than long, gentle carries. If your consumption looks high against this band, look at the cycle before you blame the machine.

How do you confirm the right capacity for your own machine?

Three checks, in order of reliability.

The operator’s manual for your exact variant. This is the only figure that is definitive. Machines of the same model name can differ between emission stages and market versions, and the manual is written for the one you own.

The decals on the machine. Most loaders carry capacity markings near the filler points. They are quick to read and they travel with the machine, which matters on a used purchase where the manual has usually gone missing.

The published specification, as a cross-check. Figures like the ones in the table above are good for planning an oil purchase or comparing machines before you buy. Treat a spec that looks far out of line with similar machines as a misprint and confirm it before acting on it.
