Excavator engine oil capacity is the number of litres the engine sump holds at an oil change, and on machines sold in India it runs from about 3.8 litres on a 1.8-tonne mini excavator to around 35 litres on a 34-tonne machine. A 20-tonne excavator, the size most Indian contractors own, generally takes between 14 and 23 litres.
The hydraulic tank is a separate and much larger figure, usually 120 to 240 litres on a 20-tonne machine. Both numbers matter for the same practical reason: you cannot order oil, price a service or judge a dealer’s quote without them. The table below lists the published capacities for excavators currently on DesiMachines, from mini machines to the 34-tonne class.

How much engine oil does a 20-tonne excavator take?
Between roughly 14 and 23 litres, depending on the engine rather than on the size of the machine. Two excavators of almost identical operating weight can differ by 9 litres because one runs a six-cylinder engine and the other a smaller, harder-worked four-cylinder.
That is why a class figure is only a starting point. The Tata Hitachi EX 200 Infra at around 20 tonnes holds 14 litres, while the Komatsu PC210-10M0 at 20.9 tonnes holds 23.1 litres. Buy oil against your own model, not against the class.

How much hydraulic oil does an excavator hold?
A 20-tonne excavator carries roughly 120 to 240 litres in its hydraulic tank, a mini excavator carries 18 to 40 litres, and a 34-tonne machine can hold close to 400 litres. It is the single largest fluid volume on the machine and the most expensive one to replace.
One point catches out first-time owners: the tank figure is not the whole system. Oil also sits in the pump, the cylinders, the hoses and the travel and swing motors. When a workshop drains and refills a system completely it uses more oil than the tank number suggests, so a quote that looks high may simply be an honest one. Ask the workshop whether the job is a tank drain or a full system flush before you compare two prices.
Hydraulic oil is usually changed on a long interval, commonly around 2,000 hours or every two years, with the filters changed several times in between. How often does an excavator need an oil change?
Engine oil on most excavators sold in India is changed every 250 to 500 hours, and the interval is counted in engine hours, not months. A machine working ten hours a day reaches 250 hours in about a month; a machine on light municipal work may take three months to get there. The hour meter, not the calendar, decides.
The usual shape of the schedule looks like this, and the operator’s manual for your model is the only authority on the exact figures:
- Daily: check engine oil, hydraulic oil and coolant levels, drain the water separator, grease the boom, arm and bucket pins, and look under the machine for fresh leaks.
- First service, about 50 to 100 hours on a new machine: an early engine oil and filter change while the engine beds in, normally covered by the dealer.
- 250 to 500 hours: engine oil and oil filter, fuel filters, air filter cleaned or replaced.
- 1,000 hours: hydraulic filters, final drive and swing gear oil checked or changed, cooling system inspected.
- 2,000 hours or two years: the hydraulic oil itself, plus coolant.
Dust shortens every one of these intervals. A machine loading crusher feed or working an unmade haul road takes in far more dust than one digging a city drain, and the air and hydraulic filters are what pay for it. Work in water or slush adds a second demand: grease the pins again the same day rather than waiting for the next morning.
What else on an excavator needs topping up?
Engine oil and hydraulic oil are the two big volumes, but four smaller ones decide whether the machine reaches its next service without a stoppage.
Final drive oil sits in each travel motor at the ends of the tracks. It is a small quantity, it is easy to forget, and a final drive run low is one of the more expensive repairs on a tracked machine. Swing gearbox oil is the same story at the other end of the machine, in the housing the upper structure turns on. Coolant matters more in Indian summers than most owners allow for. Use the coolant the manual specifies rather than plain water, keep the radiator and oil cooler fins clean of dust, and check the level when the engine is cold. Grease is the cheapest consumable on the machine and the one that saves the most money: every pin on the boom, arm and bucket takes it, and a bucket pin that has run dry will need a workshop, not a grease gun.
How do you use these numbers when buying oil?
Work backwards from the capacity to the pack size, then to the quote. Three steps cover it.
- Match the pack to the sump. A machine that takes 22 litres needs a 26-litre or two 20-litre packs, not a single 20-litre pack that leaves it a fortnight short of the mark.
- Ask for the rate per litre and the labour separately. Once you know the litres, an itemised quote is easy to check and a padded one is easy to spot.
- Use the grade the manual specifies. Engine oil, hydraulic oil, gear oil and final-drive oil are four different products on the same machine, and mixing them up is an expensive mistake that no discount justifies.
Keep the drained oil accounted for as well. Used oil has a resale value in most Indian markets, and an operator who quietly sells it while telling you the machine was topped up is a problem worth catching early.

What about backhoe loaders and other machines?
Backhoe loaders hold far less: 8 to 15 litres of engine oil and 60 to 125 litres of hydraulic oil, because the machines are lighter and the hydraulic circuits are simpler. Where these figures come from, and how to confirm yours
Every figure above is the service capacity published for that model on its own product page, which in turn comes from the manufacturer’s specification sheet. They are accurate for the variant listed and current as of July 2026.
Confirm your own machine three ways before a service. Read the operator’s manual, which lists capacities for your exact variant and is the only document that overrides everything else. Check the plate or sticker near the filler on many machines. And ask the authorised dealer for that model, in writing, if the manual has gone missing — a request they handle routinely. Machines of the same badge built in different years also differ. An older Tata Hitachi EX 210LC Prime and a current one can carry different engines, so match the year and variant, not only the model name.
