Bengaluru Suburban Rail Contracts: Cemindia Wins Rs 665.61 Cr Mallige Viaduct, Gayatri JV Takes Rs 342 Cr Kanaka Package

Reviewed by 4 min read

Bengaluru’s suburban rail project has handed out two civil packages in two days, and both are concrete-heavy. K-RIDE issued Cemindia Projects a Letter of Acceptance on 29 October for Package 1 of the Mallige Line, worth Rs 665.61 crore. On 30 October Gayatri Projects told the exchanges that its joint venture had won a Rs 342 crore package on the Kanaka Line. For anyone hiring out cranes, piling rigs or a concrete fleet in Karnataka, these are the two jobs to price against for the next two years.

The work at a glance

  • Mallige Line (Corridor-2), Package 1: Cemindia Projects, Rs 665.61 crore excluding GST, LoA dated 29 October 2026, 24 months.
  • Scope: 7.795 km of elevated viaduct with ramps between Benniganahalli and Shettihalli, a double-decker rail-cum-road flyover and a station at Mathikere.
  • Kanaka Line (Corridor-4), Package 1: the RNS-GPL joint venture, which includes Gayatri Projects, Rs 342 crore, 24 months.
  • Scope: about 6.2 km of at-grade formation and 3.6 km of elevated viaduct between Benniganahalli and Jakkur.

What K-RIDE awarded

Metro Rail Today reported the Cemindia LoA on 29 October, and Moneycontrol carried it the next day with comment from a K-RIDE official. Both put the value at Rs 665.61 crore before GST. The package also covers road flyover ramps, a Y-loop ramp, foot overbridges and works at Hebbal, Shettihalli and Yeshwanthpur. Cemindia was named lowest bidder for this package in early September, so the LoA is the stage change, not a repeat of the bid result.

Gayatri Projects filed the Kanaka award with BSE at 16:52 on 30 October. The filing names the client as Bengaluru Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprise (B-RIDE). Kalkine reproduced the filing’s scope, which lists formation, embankments and cuttings, blanketing, bridges, retaining walls, drains, boundary walls and fencing.

Which machines this work needs

Start with the rates. The Mallige package works out to about Rs 85 crore per km. That is above the Rs 71 crore per km of Dilip Buildcon’s Solapur elevated road corridor and well below underground metro money. A rate that high on an elevated line is the double-decker talking. The 1.2 km two-level section on Mohan Kumar Road, between Mathikere and Yeshwanthpur, was designed that way because the street has no spare width.

That constraint picks the fleet. Expect bored piling rigs, crawler and hydraulic cranes sized to work inside traffic barricades, batching plants, transit mixers and concrete pumps running mostly at night. Heavy lifts in a congested street are normally hired with operators. The piling rigs and the mixers that stay for 24 months are the ones a contractor weighs buying.

The Kanaka package costs about Rs 35 crore per km because most of it is ground-level railway formation. Formation is earthwork: excavators and tippers for cut and fill, motor graders for the blanket layer, and vibratory soil compactors to meet railway density specs. Drains, retaining walls and boundary walls on both sides are backhoe loader and mini excavator work. The 3.6 km viaduct adds its own small piling and crane spread.

The two packages share Benniganahalli, so some suppliers will be serving both sites. A 24-month clock from late October takes in two January to May dry seasons, which is when earthwork moves fastest.

What follows next

  • Mobilisation at Mathikere and Hebbal, and the traffic diversion plan for Mohan Kumar Road.
  • Any further Kanaka Line civil packages K-RIDE brings to tender, and who bids for them.
  • Gayatri’s next filing or results commentary, which may name its JV share and the start date.
