Motor graders sold in India run from 74 HP (55 kW) to 533 HP (397 kW), and the class of machine decides that figure long before the brand does. Motor grader engine power is published for all 42 graders listed on DesiMachines, and peak torque for 39 of them, as per the current September 2026 spec sheets.

That is a seven-fold spread in power. A contractor grading village roads and a contractor grading a mine haul road are reading the same spec sheet and need completely different numbers from it.

How much engine power does a motor grader have in India?

A motor grader in India runs between 74 HP and 533 HP, but almost none of that range will apply to your job. The machines cluster tightly by blade class, and the Indian mainstream is far narrower than the full span suggests.

Of the 42 graders listed, 20 sit in one class: a 3,360 to 3,710 mm (11 to 12 ft) blade on 130 to 225 HP (97 to 168 kW). That single group is the state-highway and district-road machine, and it is what most Indian buyers end up comparing.

Below it sit nine compact machines from 74 to 150 HP, built for village roads, municipal work and tight sites. Above it are eight heavy graders and four large ones. A single mining grader at 533 HP sits on its own, well past anything a road contractor needs.

Power alone does not place a machine in a class. Blade width and weight do that, and the engine is sized to suit. The full weight figures are set out in the guide to motor grader weight and dimensions by blade class.

Motor grader engine power and torque by class

Every figure below comes from the spec sheets of the 42 graders listed, grouped by blade width. Torque is the twisting force the engine can produce; it is measured in Newton metres (Nm) and it is what holds the blade in a cut when the ground fights back.

Torque is published for 39 of the 42 machines. In the mainstream class it is missing on one machine, and in the large class on two, so those two bands are built from fewer readings than the power bands beside them.

Read the torque column across the classes and the pattern is clearer than the power column. Power roughly doubles from the compact class to the heavy class. Torque more than doubles. That gap is the real difference between a grader that trims a surface and one that holds a full cut through hard material.

What is the engine on a motor grader actually powering?

On most machines the engine mainly moves the machine. On a grader it does four jobs at once, and that is why the power figure is not directly comparable with a tractor or a tipper.

The engine drives the wheels, so the machine keeps moving forward while the blade is loaded. It drives the hydraulic pump that lifts, tilts and side-shifts the moldboard (the blade itself). It turns the circle, the large toothed ring the blade hangs from, which swings the blade to the angle you want. And on machines fitted with a ripper or scarifier at the back, it pulls those teeth through packed ground as well.

All of that happens while the blade is holding a cut, which means the engine is rarely working at a steady load. The layout of these parts is explained in the guide to how motor graders work.

The engines themselves are ordinary diesel units. Ten of the listed graders run a 4-cylinder engine, 23 run a 6-cylinder, and nine machines do not publish a cylinder count. Engine capacity runs from 3.5 litres on the smallest Mahindra machines to 15.24 litres on the largest Komatsu, across the 36 machines that publish a single clean figure. As a rough guide, 4-cylinder engines of 3.5 to 4.6 litres carry the compact and lighter mainstream machines, and 6-cylinder engines take over from there.

Does more horsepower mean better grading?

No. Grading quality is set by the weight behind the blade, the width of the blade and the skill of the operator. Engine power decides how fast the machine can do that work without bogging down.

Two machines in the listed range make the point. The Sany STG140C-10 runs 150 HP (112 kW) on a 3,660 mm blade at 12,650 kg. The Cat 120 GC runs 171 HP (128 kW) on a 3,700 mm blade at 14,496 kg. The power difference is 21 HP. The weight difference is nearly two tonnes, and on hard ground the weight will show up in the finished surface long before the horsepower does.

Extra power earns its money in a different way: it holds a working speed. A grader that has to slow down every time the blade loads up needs more passes to finish the same stretch. What that means for output per hour is worked through in the guide to motor grader productivity and passes per hour.

Why torque matters more than horsepower on a grader

Horsepower is the headline figure. Torque is the one that decides whether the blade stalls.

Think of it in everyday terms. Horsepower tells you how quickly work gets done. Torque tells you how hard the engine can pull at the moment it meets resistance, which on a grader is every time the blade bites into compacted soil or old road crust.

The important detail is the engine speed at which peak torque arrives. Across the listed machines, peak torque is published between 1,100 and 1,800 rpm, and on all 32 graders that publish both figures it arrives below the rated power speed, which runs from 1,800 to 2,400 rpm. That is deliberate. It means the engine pulls hardest at the low working speeds a grader actually uses, rather than at the high speeds it only reaches on the road.

When you compare two graders of similar power, the one with more torque at a lower rpm will hold a heavier cut. Ask the dealer for both figures, not just the horsepower.

What is variable horsepower on a motor grader?

Some spec sheets print two power figures for the same engine. That is not a printing mistake. It is variable horsepower, a system that allows the engine to produce more power in the higher gears than it does in the working gears.

The reason is simple. In first and second gear the grader needs pulling force, not speed, and limiting power there protects the transmission and keeps fuel use down. In the higher gears, where the machine is travelling or finishing at speed, the controller releases the extra power.

Three of the listed machines publish this openly. The SEM 917F is rated 150 HP (112 kW) and 167 HP (125 kW). The BEML BG605I publishes 150.18 HP at 1,800 rpm and 160.91 HP at 2,300 rpm. The BEML BG405A publishes 125 HP at 2,400 rpm and 133 HP at 2,300 rpm. The XCMG GR1705 describes its engine as electronically controlled variable horsepower without splitting the rating.

When a machine carries two ratings, treat the lower figure as the one you own. That is the power available in the gears where the grading is done, and it is the figure used for this guide’s class bands. A dealer quoting only the higher number is quoting the transport rating.

How much engine power do you need for village roads, highways and mining?

Match the power to the road you are building, not to the biggest machine your budget stretches to. A grader that is too large is slow to move between sites, expensive to transport and awkward on narrow village roads.

  • Village roads, farm tracks, municipal work: 74 to 150 HP (55 to 112 kW) on a blade up to 3,050 mm. These are the small 4 to 12 tonne graders, and they handle PMGSY-type rural road work and site levelling well.
  • District and state highways, large site work: 130 to 225 HP (97 to 168 kW) on an 11 to 12 ft blade. This is the 12 to 20 tonne class and the busiest part of the Indian market.
  • National highways, airports, heavy earthworks: 150 to 290 HP (112 to 216 kW) on a 13 to 14 ft blade, for long runs where passes per kilometre decide the programme.
  • Mining haul roads and very large earthworks: 280 HP (209 kW) and above on a 16 ft blade or wider. These are the large graders above 20 tonnes.

What do CEV Stage IV and Stage V mean on a grader engine?

CEV stands for Construction Equipment Vehicle. CEV Stage IV and CEV Stage V are the Indian emission standards for construction machinery, notified under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, and they set how much the engine is allowed to emit. Stage V is the tighter of the two and applies to newer machines.

This matters for two practical reasons. A CEV Stage V engine usually carries extra after-treatment hardware, which means a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank to keep filled and a service routine to follow. And on government contracts the emission stage is increasingly asked for in the tender documents.

The spec sheets are uneven here, so check before you buy. Of the 40 listed graders that publish an engine description, 14 name a CEV stage, two name only a BS stage, eight name only an international standard such as US EPA Tier 4 or EU Stage IV, and 16 describe the engine construction without naming any emission norm at all. A machine whose sheet quotes only a US or EU norm is usually an imported specification, and the India-market engine may differ.

How to check an engine power figure before you buy

Four checks take five minutes and catch most of the confusion around power figures.

Convert the units yourself. One horsepower is 0.7457 kW, so a 100 HP engine is about 75 kW. If a sheet’s HP and kW figures do not agree with that conversion, one of them has been typed wrong. Among the 42 machines listed here, one sheet fails this check, which is a useful reminder that a printed number still needs confirming with the dealer.

Check the rpm beside the figure. A power rating without an engine speed is incomplete. The listed graders quote rated power between 1,800 and 2,400 rpm, and two machines rated at the same horsepower can behave differently if one reaches it at a lower speed.

Ask which rating you are being sold. Where two power figures exist, confirm whether the quotation refers to the working rating or the higher transport rating.

Ask for gross or net. Gross power is measured at the engine flywheel before the fan, alternator and pump take their share. Net power is what reaches the work. The figures in this guide are gross power, as published on the spec sheets.
