Road roller engine power is the maximum output of the diesel engine fitted to a compactor, written as horsepower (HP) with the same figure in kilowatts (kW) beside it. Across the 45 compactors listed on DesiMachines it runs from 24 HP (18 kW) on the smallest baby roller to 197 HP (147 kW) on the largest soil compactor. All 45 machines publish the figure, so the class ranges below are counted, not estimated.

The important thing to understand early is that the engine does not do the compacting. The drum does. The engine drives the wheels, spins the vibration pump and runs the water spray, and how much soil gets squeezed underneath depends far more on drum weight and vibration force than on the HP badge. How much engine power does a road roller have in India?

A road roller in India runs between 24 HP and 197 HP depending on its class, with most machines falling between 74 HP and 133 HP. The three classes sold here separate cleanly, and each one has its own working band.

What does a road roller’s engine actually power?

The engine on a roller runs four things, and only one of them is moving the machine forward. Understanding the split is what stops a buyer from over-reading the HP number.

First, the travel system. This is a hydrostatic drive, meaning a pump pushes oil to motors at the drums instead of a gearbox and propeller shaft turning them. Second, the vibration system, a separate pump and motor that spins a weighted shaft inside the drum. Third, the water spray that keeps bitumen from sticking to the drum, plus the steering and brake circuits. Fourth, the alternator that charges the battery and runs the lights and cabin.

The vibration circuit is the heavy consumer, and it is the reason a roller needs more engine than its weight suggests. A 74 HP tandem roller like the Volvo DD90 spends a good share of that power throwing its drums up and down 50 times a second rather than pushing itself along at 12 km/h. Does more engine power mean better compaction?

No. Compaction comes from drum weight and centrifugal force, and neither of those tracks engine power. Centrifugal force is the downward push the spinning weight inside the drum produces, measured in kilonewtons (kN). Think of it as the extra weight the drum borrows from the vibration while it is running.

Specifications current as of September 2026. Read the first and fifth rows together. The JCB VM117 makes 256 kN on 74 HP. The HAMM HC 139iD, with 128 HP (nearly double the engine), makes 241 kN, which is less. The ACE ASD 115 at 112 HP also lands below the 74 HP JCB. Only the XCMG XS115H, the highest-powered of the six, also tops the force table, and even there the 133 HP buys about 11 percent more force than 74 HP does.

So a salesman who answers “how good is this machine” with a horsepower figure has told you very little. Ask for centrifugal force and operating weight in the same breath, then check what the drum will actually do at your layer thickness. Why do so many rollers stop at 74 HP and 99 HP?

Because engine ratings cluster around emission-norm boundaries rather than spreading evenly. Sorting all 45 machines by horsepower produces two crowds and two completely empty gaps.

Twenty-three of the 45 machines, more than half, sit inside two narrow bands only a few horsepower wide, and there is not a single roller anywhere between 51 and 73 HP or between 76 and 98 HP. That is not what a market driven purely by customer demand looks like.

The explanation is in the units. Indian emission norms for construction equipment are written in kilowatts, not horsepower, and the certification requirements change as an engine crosses from one kW band into the next. 74 HP is 55 kW and 99 HP is 74 kW, both of which sit just under a threshold. Engine makers specify to stay on the cheaper side of the line, and the horsepower figure you read on the brochure is the result. What this means for you as a buyer is simple: a 74 HP roller and a 75 HP roller are the same machine class, and a jump to 99 HP is a real step up rather than a small increment. There is nothing in between to compare against.

How much engine power does a mini or baby roller need?

A mini or baby roller runs between 24 HP and 48.5 HP, and eight of the 45 machines listed sit in that range. These are the small double-drum machines used for footpaths, colony roads, patch repairs and trench backfill, where a full-size roller cannot turn.

For this class the engine figure matters more than it does higher up, because there is so little of it. A 24 HP machine towing itself up a village approach road with the vibration running has nothing spare. If your work includes slopes or soft ground, take the 45 to 48 HP end rather than the 24 to 25 HP end, even though both are sold as baby rollers. What engine power does a soil compactor run?

Soil compactors start at 74 HP and the working class sits at 99–133 HP, with a median of 110 HP (82 kW) across the 21 machines listed. This is the single-drum machine most contractors mean when they say “road roller”, the one used on embankments, subgrade and PMGSY and NHAI earthwork.

The 11-tonne class is where almost all the volume is. L&T 1190 and Escorts EC 5250 at 102 and 110 HP, LiuGong 611 and SANY SSR110C-10 PRO at 110 HP, and the ACE ASD 115 at 112 HP all land within ten horsepower of each other on machines of roughly the same weight. At that point the engine is not the differentiator. The amplitude settings, the drum, the cab and the dealer’s service reach are.

Above the 11-tonne class the numbers climb sharply. The SANY SSR220C-8H runs 197 HP (147 kW) at 22,000 kg (22 Ton), the only machine on the list above 136 HP, and it is a dedicated large-earthwork tool rather than a general-purpose roller. What about tandem rollers and pneumatic tyre rollers?

Full-size tandem rollers cluster hard at 74–75 HP, and pneumatic tyre rollers run 99–131 HP. These are the two asphalt machines, and their engine figures reflect two different jobs.

The 8–10 tonne tandem rollers sit at 74–75 HP almost without exception: Volvo DD90, CASE 952NX, SANY STR90C-10 PRO, L&T 990HFi and Escorts HD 85 PLUS. Only the Dynapac CC425 T3 ROPS breaks the pattern at 99 HP. One thing worth knowing: tandem roller listings publish static linear load in kg/cm rather than an operating weight, because on a double-drum machine what matters is how much weight sits on each centimetre of drum width. Pneumatic tyre rollers need more engine for a different reason. A PTR compacts with rubber tyres and gets its weight from ballast. The Dynapac CP275 weighs 14,000 kg (14 Ton) empty and 30,000 kg (30 Ton) ballasted, so the engine has to move up to double the machine’s own weight, with no vibration to help. Does a higher-HP road roller cost more?

Within a class, not reliably. Engine power and price move together across classes but come apart inside them, and the soil compactors show it plainly.

Indicative ranges as listed in September 2026. The 74 HP JCB VM117 is dearer than the 112 HP ACE ASD 115, and close to the 128 HP HAMM. You are paying for the brand, the build, the dealer network and the resale, and the horsepower figure is riding along rather than setting the price.

The mini rollers sit far below all of this. The Dynapac CC800 at 24 HP is listed at ₹13–17 Lakh, and the CASE 450NX at 25 HP at ₹15–18 Lakh. Whose engine is inside an Indian road roller?

Indian engine makers supply the majority. Of the 45 compactors listed, 32 run an engine built in India: KOEL (Kirloskar) on 9 machines, Mahindra on 10, Ashok Leyland on 7, VECV on 3, Escorts on 2 and Simpson on 1. The remaining 13 use Cummins, Weichai, Kubota, John Deere, CNH or JCB units.

This matters more than the badge on the bonnet. An Ashok Leyland or Mahindra engine has spare parts in almost every district town in the country, and a mechanic who has worked on a truck with the same block can usually help you. An imported engine on a machine working 200 km from the nearest authorised dealer can wait days for a part. Before you sign, ask the dealer where the nearest engine spares counter is, not just where the machine dealership is. What to check on the engine before you buy

Read road roller engine power alongside three other figures rather than on its own, and read all four off the specification sheet rather than the brochure headline.

  • Engine power with the rpm beside it. “110 HP (82 kW) @ 2200 rpm” is a complete figure. A bare HP number with no rpm is not comparable between machines.
  • Torque, where it is published. Torque is the turning force the engine produces, and it is what climbs a gradient. The Escorts HD 85 PLUS publishes 340 Nm at 1400 rpm on 75 HP; the Volvo DD90 publishes 300 Nm at 1200–1800 rpm on the same 74 HP. Same power, different pulling character.
  • Gradeability. This is the steepest slope the machine will climb, as a percentage. It does not follow horsepower: the 102 HP L&T 1190 is rated at 40% while the 133 HP XCMG XS115H is rated at 31%. Full treatment in the road roller speed and gradeability guide.
  • Emission norm. CEV Stage-V machines are the current build. Check what the tender or the client requires before ordering, because an older-norm machine can be refused on a government job.

And keep the order of importance straight. For compaction, drum weight and centrifugal force come first, amplitude and frequency second, engine power third. The engine matters most when the site is steep, when the machine has to travel between locations under its own power, or when you are at the 24–25 HP end of the mini rollers where there is no margin at all.
